Yes, that's the same reason why is better to go with winter tires around here, even if the RRS could handle snow on summer tires(even if the crash is not your fault you'll get at least part of the blame.) I went for the 19", yes they are expensive here, but I like to have that bit of shoulder more for winter, still looking for chains, even if I'll probably never use them. In my experience a narrow tyre works better in most snow conditions as it allows the tyre to cut down through the snow and get some grip inside or underneath the snow. It also creates a "tram line" effect that allows the vehicle to keep its line. A wider tyre can mean the car almost "floats" on top of the snow and doesn't get any traction or directional stability. I guess in really deep snow - wider tyres may mean the vehicle wouldn't "belly out" on the snow. The guys from countries that get lots more snow than we have in the UK will have better wisedom on this. RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini Disco 4 TDv6 HSE Ipanema Defender 90, 200tdi CSW |

A couple of inches fine, that allows you with the weight of the vehicle to get down to the roadsurface, whether that be tarmac or gravel etc and keep traction. However, if your talking proper snow, wide tyres with low pressures are a must. Just look at the guys in places like Canada, Iceland, Norway etc, they run on a min of 38" upto 44" Speed Limits! not where I live!

I took my RRS to Val D'Isere last year and off to Switzerland this year and never had a reason to use Snow chains. Even before the roads had been cleared, the Pirellis did the job adequately as long as you drive sensibly and use the Snow Traction setting.
