My mum has noticed a program on her PC called 'WinRAR' and I haven't a clue what it is or what it does.

RAR files are a compressed file format, a little like zip files. WinRAR is a Windows RAR program, equivalent to WinZip. Why it's on your mum's machine, who knows?

S, when she tried to open it her avast protection said the program was trying to connect via her broadband. Is this an automatic thing checking for updates? Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award

Very probably, I don't have it here. A lot of apps do though. You should find you can disable it....

Try loading Mozilla Firefox and running it - it's free and doesn't suffer from anywhere near as many glitches as IE
