RAR files are a compressed file format, a little like zip files. WinRAR is a Windows RAR program, equivalent to WinZip. Why it's on your mum's machine, who knows?

S, when she tried to open it her avast protection said the program was trying to connect via her broadband. Is this an automatic thing checking for updates? Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Very probably, I don't have it here. A lot of apps do though. You should find you can disable it....

It's just a compression programme, the same idea as Winzip.

Here's a link to a page if you want more info.

Resident boffins, I seem to have a problem with my PC accessing this site only.

When it opens a new page, it always seems to freeze for about 5 seconds of so then carry on as normal.

It doesn't do this when accessing during the week on my work laptop.

Both machines have Kaspersky Internet Security installed, both are Windows XP, both running Internet Explorer.

Any ideas? Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Try loading Mozilla Firefox and running it - it's free and doesn't suffer from anywhere near as many glitches as IE

Also try running Spybot Search and Destroy, it's also available for free from here http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html
It usually cures things like this 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Sounds like spybot has stopped Kaspersky updating , if you have let it auto protect then this might be why. Have a look in the settings ( cant remember off hand where ) but there must be a list of things that have been stopped from accessing internet etc ... Very much like Firewall. Alternatively turn spybot off then update antivirus to prove the point. Ive never had this problem with Spybot but its possible.

Right...

I've uninstalled Spybot as it seems this is what has caused the issue.

It removed most files but said remaining files had to be removed manually so I did this however one file was locked and I can't delete it.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled kaspersky and still it won't update!
