HDC works by variable application of the brakes on each wheel of the vehicle. It is trying to keep each wheel travelling at the same speed and not skidding - thereby helping the vehicle stay in control and in a straight line. The noises are each wheel disc being partialy released by the brake pads to allow them to rotate, then slowing the rotation down by greater aplication, then releasing them a bit and on and on. There is a lot of variable friction betweem the pads and discs on each corner so they each "sing" slightly different grinding tunes, added to by the hammering noise of the braking pistons pumping in and out pretty hard.

For those occasional moments where you might need it, the noise would have turned you away from an RRS? That's peculiar, but I guess you didn't buy it for its offroading prowess then...at any rate, you shouldn't need it in a parking garage if that's the steepest hill you'll find. If I'm not mistaken HDC speed can be set and then altered by using the cruise control buttons. Actually a quite useful on road feature. |
