Well all I can say to that, is that I never had a Dell computer last longer than a year and a half to two years. I’ve had desktops & laptops & each one was wonderful when it was new, but slowly started to degrade over time, until it turned into treacle around the two year mark. If I had a pound for every time I ended up rebuilding Dell computers. I also found Dell’s helpline absolutely useless & downright frustrating. I would never go near one again. Until recently I had a creaky old Apple Performa which I bought in 1993, which I had kept to run one particular application I never could replace & it outlasted & out performed any Dell PC I ever had. I’m a MAC man at heart & have been for years, currently running an iMac & a Mac Book Pro. But that’s for my own personal use. At the office we run PC’s & in recent years I’ve got everything changed over to HP & for a PC I would definitely recommend HP as the only way to go, be it desktop or laptop. Funnily enough, there’s a lighting control software package I use on site, which runs under windows, so I got an Acer Aspire laptop to run it, as I just wanted something cheap ‘n’ cheerful. I must say that it’s a fine machine indeed, most surprising & would prefer it to any Dell laptop I had in the past. |

I'd say you had bad luck then Rupert. I have rolled out literally thousands of Dell PCs and laptops in my lifetime and have had nothing but low failure rates and excellent support. All my kit at home is Dell, apart from my work-supplied laptop which is HP (and rubbish)... although I just bought a new laptop for my sister, which is also an HP (excellent online bargain from Ebuyer) and is actually quite a nice bit of kit.

S - Smarticus did actually get a good deal on that specific laptop - I know it sounds strange, but in this case it was a good deal (I checked a few trade prices) |

I agree - normally they are not competitive - in the short term however there are deals to be had on the high street - they need to shift stock a most have pre-orders that they are already liable for so need to jut get rid - combine that with the normal volume rebates they get means they will shift stock under cost (I'm talking Currys etc)

Perhaps so, but geez Dells have broke my heart over the years.
...... & I've nothing but success with HP's. Amazing isn't it ?? What works for one, doesn't for the other.
I've always found PC's to be irritating in the extreme in their operation, in fact downright awkward & obstructive. The only exception being XP, which I do quite like. But I just love the way the various Apple OS's work. We are as you could say..... At one with each other |
