Tragic death

Today two people and a dog were found dead on a small fiberglass cruiser moored outside a pub on the Shropshire union canal, opposite our boatyard in Staffordshire.

they ere discovered at about 12 o'clock midday by a friend of the deceased, who came over to my office in a bit of a state, i called the police and emergency services who turned up a short while later, they quickly cordoned off the area by the boat and part of our wharf, while the conducted there enquiries

The man who was found was a frequent user of our services we all knew him, he was a colour full loud character and it would appear that they both died from carbon monoxide poising, although not yet confirmed, they have only just removed the bodies from the boat.

The place has been swarming with police and reporters all afternoon, taking statements.

It has been a sad day, and one i hope is never to be repeated at my work place, and on my Birthday, which has somewhat taken the edge off the day. Sad

I wasn't going out to the pub tonight, but i am now some of my Previous cars

I always try and get people who have 'vulnerable' appliances to have a carbon monoxide alarm (the ones like a smoke alarm not the waste of time cards)

I buy them and sell them on for no profit, just think they are a good idea.

For £20 odd it can be as much of a life saver as a smoke alarm Crying or Very sad

He was a really nice chap, loved his pop, a bit on the wild side at times but would never hurt anybody physically. You are right things do get put into perspective, as Cliff H said, what is £20.00 to save your own life or your partners. It is so unnecessary. We all put things off and, put things in a "Must get round to it" pile. maybe he would have had his heater serviced next week, who knows!
We have had a couple of friends die on boats, one chap tied a rope to himself and jumped into the propeller another did an "ear to ear" I do not want to be too graphic, in front of his wife. All of it is deeply saddening. But we can all use it as kick up the backside and sort ourselves out, it is just all wrong!! Sad no regrets!
ONE LIFE LIVE IT.

Basicly anything that has an open flue, gas fire, open flued boilers (old style with 4/5" pipe coming straight off the top, back boilers, flueless gas fires such as plasma effect etc. They all take air from the room to burn and so are open to the room if something bad was to happen such as a blocked flue or heat exchanger.

IF YOU HAVE AN AIR BRICK IN A ROOM WITH A GAS APPLIANCE NEVER COVER IT TO STOP A DRAUGHT, it is amazing the number I have to uncover.

I have been to a couple of back boilers that were so badly blocked with carbon God knows how the owners (both times families with very young children) were not dead! Both had covered the air bricks and not had the boilers serviced in years!

The detectors that I buy / supply are the same ones that British gas and Corgi recommend. They cost about £21 plus VAT for at least 5 years protection.

In theory all modern boilers are room sealed ie they take air from outside the building and a fully sealed casing so it would be very rare for them to cause problems.

Well the police are still in attendance, have been all night, the place is still cordoned off, and they have asked all the local boaters in the area to remain until next week for further questions, the pub has been shut since yesterday, and not sure when its allowed to open, fortunately for us it hasn't affected us and we are still open for business as usual. some of my Previous cars
