MPG on a long run

On Friday I drove my usual route from Stirling to Sway in the New Forest...................stopping overnight at Killington Lake. The trip south was good, cool weather no rain and inportantly a following breeze but WHY oh Why can I not get the MPG any higher than 31.2mpg on the trip. I sat at 70-75 with the odd burst to a little bit higher where necessary and stuck to the speed limits in all the road works sections, but I just seem to have hit an MPG "Ceiling". Some freinds down here who I visited today and are Land Rover fanatics have suggested I try the trip north with a tankful of BP Ultimate or the Shell equivalent - they found that when they accidentally filled their motorhome tank with it they were able to tow their offroad racing Defender behind the RV in top gear and hold it, which was the first time in many trips of towing like this that they had ever been to get into 5th gear even going uphill. Now they are great believers in filling up for long trips with Ultimate or whatever Shell calls their fancy stuff.
Does anybody have any experience using these fancy fuels, and are they really worth paying 3-4ppl extra for? Problem for me is that I will have to drive a hell of a lot of miles down here to get the tank low enough to make a fill-up worthwhile. I got here on 2/3rds of a tank of ordinary derv - 505 miles on 2/3rds of a tank isn't too bad, why am I being taxed for owning a "gas guzzler" that doesn't Laughing 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

and all comes down to the same avaerage @ 34-37 mpg and to be honest the car seems to be getting better Thumbs Up has approx 7000 miles on the clock now
