Sorry about this but I thought we were all Land Rover fans on this site what is this talk about BMW and more importantly getting rid of the RRS for an X5 are you serious. Shocked Shocked

The X5 is nothing but an over sized estate car has no off road capabilities at all, our RRS can go any where any time, I need a decent 4X4 to cope with the conditions where I live, there is no way a footballers car could cope. Very Happy Very Happy

Now if you were talking about the Mercedes G55 that is a proper off roader and is even more attractive than the RRS. I will say here and now that both my RR's would go if a 55 came along and I could afford it. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Don't talk about G55... I will get some day... just it's too much for me atm (164k EURO (more then 200k$) )... Sad
And btw i'm not LR fan, i'm Range Rover fan - I don't like other LR stuff at all (disco and freelander)... but i'm also a bmw fan - had few bm's and they were a true pleasure to drive.
RRS is good car but not the best in the world, so why can't we discuss other car that could be overall a better choice for some of us? 2014 Mercedes-Benz S500

Portugal 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black
Just tested one...

Hi!

I’ve just test drive yesterday one of the new X5 3.0 diesel, and just want to share my opinion.
I must recognize it is a superb engine! A friend of mine as one ML 320CDI which impressed me a lot, but I did consider the new X5 to handle better and feel more vigour. No doubt it’s engine will be class leader.
I suppose the RRS TDV8 will have similar/better performance, but it’s a bigger engine and with much more emissions (which in Portugal now translates to much more expensive). Even so, dynamically the X5 on road does seem to be unbeatable.

Besides performance, the interiors are just excellent. Quality is what you would expect to find in a top BMW, and I must admit it feels a little better then the RRS. (Less plastics and perfect ergonomics). Every thing is very sophisticated with a lot of attention to class details. For example, you don’t have to press the short cut buttons on the nave system, just pass your finger in front of them and the screen will tell you the function it will activate if you press it. Now you have a dim light that illuminates not only the centre console, but also the door pouches… you have a sense of quality every where, and I particularly liked the electrical gear handle, that thing is just like a joystick.(although the gear shift button position, requires some use to it) Best of all, is that head-up display gysmo that is just amazing! I'm positive that in the short future a lot of cars will have that option, because its just useful, practical, a really 'must have'…

The thing that less impressed me was the looks. Personally I didn’t liked that much. It looks better then in the pictures, but I was keener on the older looks, and these are no match to our RRS.. All this is very subjective of course, but I’m sure we’ll star seeing a lot of them, as you don’t see that many RRS!
Of course, has normal with BMWs, the extras cost is absurd, and to gear it up to a RRS HSE level, and adding in the head-up and those distinctive features, you end up with a big price tag…

So… it is and excellent car, probably class leader in many features, i'm sure it will sell a lot, but I don’t regret buying my RRS! Very Happy

Good to hear something on the new X5.

Imho, as an on-road car it will always drive better than an RRS. But you are right about the value of the standard kit in the RRS - if you spec an X5 up with similar kit to an HSE for example, it's much more expensive. This is one of the reasons why I chose the RRS over the X5... it was simply better value in those terms.

And of course, when it comes to leaving the tarmac, the X5 just gets left behind.

But surely everybody misses the point of the X5........................ it was never meant to be an offroad car, it was meant to appeal to people who wanted the offroader LOOK in an estate car body without the ability to actually get to the middle of nowhere and it fullfilled that crireria spot on. Let's not condemn it for not being something it was never meant to be.................................. I still wouldn't buy one, but if somebody offered me a 535d Touring with the same toys as a FFRR or RRS HSE for a reasonable price then I would seriously consider one, it's the ONLY BMW that I like. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

People do miss the point of an X5... I suppose those that don't know any different see a big SUV and assume it must be an offroader. I'm not sure why BMW haven't given it more offroad ability to be honest... Porsche and VW went to a lot of trouble with the Cayenne & the Toerag so it's not like there's no market for it.

I thought that the 2007 X5 had been given the same system as the X3 which would give it much more capability offroad, but still not enough to keep up with the big boys 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim, it has. The new X5 has an improved version of the X3 system, which apparently does allow for some adventures off-road. Still it hasn’t low gears neither the suspension has enough height.

The problem with this SUV vs Off-Roader thing is… how many ppl really takes a car like that ($) to do true off-road… Smile

That's exactly it!

It always amuses me when people say things like "Well, that X5 is no good offroad" waving their Defender keys at you Wink Most X5 buyers have no interest in going off road.... I would even bet a large proportion of LR buyers don't buy one with the intention of going off road.

This is why the RRS vs X5 vs Cayenne vs Toerag argument is never really resolved... you have to factor which direction you're going to approach it from Very Happy
