Private plates

I'm looking into get a private plate for the Freelander. The only uncertainty I have is what happens if the vehicle is written off? I've heard the plate would be lost, would the insurance pay for it? A week ago our mondeo was smashed into in the snow, and the insurance co are considering writing it off. This makes me worried about what would happen if it had a private plate on it, would we have lost it? I won't be looking at expensive plates but risking £250 if your car is written off is a bit scary Confused 2002 Discovery Adventurer LE

Don't Worry Andy, i had a motor stolen(not by me), once the insurance company are satisfied that it isn't going to be recovered they release the plate for changing, that will take 12 months though. I think that in the case of a write off you you tell the insurance company that you are transferring the number or putting it on to retention. Not a problem some of my Previous cars

F*ck me - I paid £3000+ for my CJM 625 plate and I'd go spare if I risked loosing that!

Answer it - crash your car? Send the log off straight away to put it on retention!

Andy, as Envoy and others say, it's a not a major problem and I think your modest outlay should be reasonably safe! Thumbs Up

Yep same here.. after the long winded purchase and transfer of my latest KAM cherished plate i would seriously hit the roof if i lost it.

Did hear a story of a girl recently lives round the corner, she had a plate on her car, and someone drove into the back of the car while it was parked. Insurance company wrote it off, and she hadn't transferred it off very quickly, and when she did send the paperwork off, she was told, sorry that plate is registered to the car still, and you're not the legal owner anymore.. She found out basically her Saxo, was written off, proceeded to be sold to a salvage merchant, who then repaired it, had it RAC inspected then sold to another customer as an ex accident damage repaired car, with the girls plate still on it!

She somehow managed to track down the new female owner and proceeded to harrass her till she sent the plate back on retention with it signed back to her. Nightmare.. but i think as long as you send your logbook off imediately and get it retained, you would beat the system swallowing it up..

Exactly my thoughts Thumbs Up It's either that or an old land rover, but I reckon with my mechanical knowledge if anything went wrong it would just sit on the drive taking up space. 2002 Discovery Adventurer LE
