Sorry Brian I went back to the dark side last night and returned to Blatchat (Caterham 7 forum).

I only owned the car for a year and had no problems with it what so ever. I also have wife and two children and car was fine when used with the family but if the mother in law came round always ended up taking the other one as it sat three in the back.

I am a fan of the bm's, had 4 m3's and a V8 m5 but all manual, apart from the CSL, but the SMG is starting to annoy me in that now, double clutching in every gear change, even found the town can get quite annoying!

I was in with the BM dealer last week and they have had a few M5's back as the customers did not warm to the SMG.... Confused

i have no actually seen an E63, E55, maybe i did but just didnt realise it!

The depreciation seems to be hard and I can see that the general feeling is, M5 or E class Amg.

Definitely M5 or E63 over the CLS... but then if someone gave me the CLS I wouldn't moan Wink

I doubt there will be a "fully" manual M5. As with most of the semi-autos they take a bit of getting used to. The current SMG incarnation is much easier to deal with than previous versions imho. I understand Audi's DSG is a better proposition though... what about an S8?

I'm a huge BM fan as most know Razz

If you have to go merc then I'd say E63 or second hand E55 with low mileage. If you dont then you can get the mighty E39 M5 with a gorgeous throaty V8 with I think its 440 or 410bhp for around £25k for an older one or anywhere up to £35k for newer one. If your going to shell out as much for CLS as you are then I'd say go for the E60 M5.
5.0L V10, 0-60 is sub 5 secs. Its an amazing car, its practical and stunning to look at. Sounds like a trat'or on cold start but when you get those RPM's up man it sounds incredible. Plus it doesnt take 5 years as T.G says to get going as all you need to do is hit 'M' on the MFSW.
It really is an amazing car and as tiff said you can drive it to a track, race round and drive back. I know the earlier build M5's are quite fragile on tracks but with a 2 yr waiting list you'd have to buy second hand if you wanted one soon. Michael Potter
