campaign against 4x4's

Just getting a wee bit Censored off with this anti-4x4 scenario that seems to be spreading countrywide. The latest media-hype in Bristol has campaigners lobbying the local council to have these vehicles banned from Bristol streets. The bristol alliance against urban 4x4's have been planting fake parking tickets, trying to draw peoples attention to the" polluting and dangerous" cars which are causing "considerable damage" to bristol's streets.

What with idiot-nuts Livingstone, councils putting up parking, and these ill-informed pressure groups who are probably just slightly jealous they cannae afford a decent motor, do you think there is a danger in the near future of the back-side falling out of the market for RRS's etc?

i'd love to catch one of these self-righteous idiots so much as touch my wiper too put this crap underneath..
they should be more concerned with the amount of pollution generated by the plants that produce the paper and the ink and all the other Censored involved with printing their drivel instead of the impact of the increase in pollution by driving a 4x4 compared to a "regular" car...do they do the same to pickups? 2007 RRS HSE Java/Ebony w/Luxury Package

no problem for me - I'll just never go to Bristol anymore - wont go to the Bristol 'Sound & Vision' Show ever again or consider going into the town to spend any money at all - their loss, not mine

I'm not usually in Bristol too often either. But as these self-styled do-gooders go, I would have thought the anti-4x4 brigade would have been far more concerned about the spiralling crime rate and drug problem sorted out in the town.

But its not just about Bristol, Its going to become a countrywide problem. I personally hope Livingstone does bring in the £25 per day congestion charge in london as these types are clamouring for. I'll happily pay it knowing the "anti's" have been screwed cos they didn't realise their 2litre mondeo or people carrier comes in the same emisions bracket, and they can't afford it!!!

... and dont forget the highly polluting Mini Cooper S, as was pointed out to some left-wing loonie London councillor on TV who's about to charge 4x4 owners a fortune for a permit to park outside their own house. It knocked the wind out of his sails and left the self-righteous Censored speechless. And another thing, what that hypocrite dictator Livingstone forgets, while he's busy flying all over the world, is that often the only realistic alternative to driving about in London is to use buses or cabs. Now, correct me if Im wrong, but I dont think they're exactly eco-friendly, are they??? Say goodbye to democracy and freedom of choice! Mad

Campaign against 4x4's

"Her indoors" penned the following email to the Campaign against Urban 4x4's and actually got a reply that sounded like it was written by a human being :
________________________________________________________________
Dear 4x4 campaign officer

I just wondered whether 4x4's had any redeeming features at all and whether there were any "acceptable" circumstances in which a family may legitimately choose one as they main form of transport ?

I confess to owning a Landrover discovery, which I find really suits our needs. We live at 1,000ft in rural Northumberland. Our hobbies are horse riding, kayaking and mountain biking. The Dicovery never fails to get us home (even when the roads are flooded, snow covered or icey), allows all the family to travel in one car on holiday, weekend or day trips, even when that means carrying kayaks, and mountain bikes as well as more normal family "baggage". It also serves as an excellent towing vehicle for the horse box, due to both its towing weight and ability to get into and out of fields where the events take place.

As regards saftey, we have never been involved in an accident, and feel that the vehicle's great all around visibility significantly helps us look ahead and see what hazards are approaching which may need to be avoided. This is particularly so on our occassional journeys into the "urban jungle".

And our long term MPG has averaged 31 mpg.

I do accept that some people choose a Discovery as a fashion statement, rather than a utility vehicle (or even a necessity). But it does really concern me that your organisation feels it necessary to single out all "4x4" owners as some form of social deviant, worthy only of derision and contempt. I believe that many people behave in a less than perfect way, choose life styles that can cause offence to others, and engage in unsafe activities or unsocial manners - but I don't feel like collecting groups of these people together and pillorying them.

He who is without sin, cast the first stone, and Live & let live.

Regards

And the reply was :

Dear Mrs Hatton
Thanks for your email.
First I'd like to clarify that the Alliance doesn't vilify all 4x4 owners.
We are working in mostly urban settings. We do feel that some people will
have a legitimate need for driving a 4x4, and that decision of need is down
to one's's conscience.
Having said that, it is a sign of our times that we will all have to take
responsibility for the CO2 emissions we produce, and perhaps for the fuel we use as it becomes more rare, so it's up to all of us to do what we can. Many 4x4 owners are converting to LPG and veg fuel.
Finally, 31 mpg is no longer very good, really. The average is around 45,
and more and more efficient cars get around 50-65 mpg, some even more. That goes down when you tow something, obviously.

Hope that helps

Hope this means the end for white vans and hgv's too. That would solve the congestion problems in the uk. Its not much fun following a HGV on a country road at 40mph for 20 miles.

Why don't we adopt the German way Question No HGV's between 7am and 9am and 5pm and 7pm weekdays and non on Sundays all day.

I assume thats still the case Angel Question It certainly used to be so. TDV6 - gone
TDV8 - gone

Just do your bit to helping reduce CO2 emissions by buying a 2007 Land Rover product.
It will include the Climate Care CO2 offset, neutralising the CO2 produced during manufacture and for the first 45,000 miles.
Otherwise, it cost about £30-40 a year to offset your existing Land Rovers CO2.
This is somewhat less that the £000`s all these anti 4x4 groups and the government are saying they want to charge 4x4 owners.

Then we can all stick 2 fingers up at them and say "My 4x4 doesnt contribute to the CO2 levels at all"

GENIUS GENIUS GENIUS.........

My Range Rover Sport 2.7Hse doing 10k miles a year is now carbon emission free!!!!!

According to www.co2balance.com the above vehicle is producing 3.1 tonnes of c02 emission per annum, and they will happily offset these emissions with either tree planting or low-energy lightbulbs for africa. So I have just invested the princely sum of TWENTY EIGHT BRITISH POUNDS!!! to spend on their plantation in cumbria, and I get get a "this car is emission free" sticker for my car. Conscience clear.

Bristol here we come....... Laughing
