Adaptive lights

Hi, first post to rrsport.co.uk, but a persistent lurker! (and on bmwland ... last cars were 535D Tourings).

Many apologies if this has been posted before; I have done a quick search through the forums (or is it fora) and did not find a reply.

I have a question regarding the adaptive Xenon headlights on the RRS TDV8 HSE I have just ordered. The vehicle is RHD but I do most of my driving on the continent. Is it possible to alter the way the headlights work when driving a RHD car on the right side of the road, or is it not an issue? I ran BMWs for 6 years and never had adaptive lights fitted because the BMW guys basically told me that I had to disable the system when driving on the right.

Any information would be gratefully received.

Regards,

John

Welcome John Very Happy

Interesting question and not one I remember seeing posted before. We have a few folks who drive both in the UK and overseas, so someone should be able to help you. Sit tight! Wink

I would think this is not possible as the ECU would probably need to be reprogrammed. But what do I know? 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Well the user manual describes a change over lever for continental driving on page 111 and mentions Xenon headlamps.

But the Adaptive Lamp section on page 211 does not mention this, but then as it looks around corners a left hand bend still goes left whether in UK or overseas so I reckon the lever on page 111 adjusts the beam pattern whilst the adaptive steers the beam pattern in the direction of the bend.

Thanks for the quick responses.

What BMW told me was that the adaptive lights in RHD cars are programmed to swivel a greater amount on a LH bend (when oncoming traffic is not blinded) compared to a RH bend (when there is the distinct possibility that oncoming traffic could be blinded). Of course, this situation is reversed when driving on the right.

Hence, it would seem appropriate that some sort of change to the swivel pattern is required, but as mlines points out, there is no mention of this in the handbook.

I read something about this problem in one of the Land Rover mags recently - it could have been LROI when they took a TDv6 HSE with adaptives to France for the Hannibal route they did and they commented that the adaptives caused problems for oncoming traffic and they got flashed a lot at night (yes I realise that there is a double entendre there for those with a sense of humour!) when driving round bends 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Its been a while since I even saw a foreign car that had taken ANY trouble to adapt their light pattern so a fine-tweak of the adaptive swivelling ratio seems a bit OTT in response Very Happy Cheers

It's not a problem. Lights can be set for Left, Centre or Right aligned.

I picked mine up with 'centre aligned' which allowed me to pass a lighting test here in Germany and also drive without dazzling people when back in the UK.

Mine was done before I picked it up so not sure if it was done at the factory or by the dealer but it is certainly possible.

Intriguing problem John, "for the curious: "forum" is a third declension neuter noun in latin. As with most latin nouns carried over to english, the nominative form is used. And the ending for third declension neuter nouns in the nominative plural is -a."...scraped from gamedev.net

Ergo. Fora. However, in English, you would use "forums"...on the matter of adaptive headlights and RHD cars, I don't have a clue Laughing 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE, Java/Ebony/Cherry, Privacy, Sunroof, PTI, Premium Sound, SatNav, Cold Climate, Tow kit, CarStyle coded grill and vents, Tasmods, Stormers, JE Exhaust, Autobiography badge

Hartleyhair - very many thanks for the information. Sounds like I need to make sure that the lights are Centre aligned by the dealer before I collect the car.

Singletrack - thanks for the English lesson!

Regards,

John
