Excellent observation would see more logical to run the rear seat headliner lights to the puddle light switch of both rear doors.
The rear courtesy lights however, only have an "on" or "off" switch - so I guess you would have to then leave them on so that they would come on when the doors are opened but could not be used when the doors (or hatch) are closed. Seems therefore that the switch would also need to be replace with that middle setting you find on other cars.
