Without intending to make light of the seriousness of the offence or the pain suffered by the victim's family in their loss, if there is to be a sentence of lifetime imprisonment, a special facility is required.

I suggest...

Actually when I was a teenager, the house opposite my folks used to have one. A time when Ladas and pre-VW Skodas were plentiful! Sad times... Laughing

Chomper, sorry to hear about your loss, and my thoughts and feelings go to the family who lost their father/brother/uncle etc in this horrific incident.

Its a sad state of affairs really.. we are all hearing these stories far too often nowadays...!

The stupid thing is, if we actually hurt someone coming into our homes/attempting to hurt our family/take our belongings, it will be us that get in more trouble. We seem to have everything to loose and the low life scum just have everything to gain.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5-X-DOOR-AND-WINDOW-...dZViewItem

Cheapest form of door/window entry notification you can buy, it WILL wake you and the person opening the door will be startled! Not a good device standalone obviously but every little helps, and this is a bloody cheap thing not to put on every door/windo that is at risk of entry.

ADT alarm systems, with police notification may also be worth considering, the brand is known as one of the best systems on the market, and is used most in commercial applications, plus home systems come with panic alarms, police notification etc my sis has one installed at her house and any time she is alone she carries the pager thing around with her, also has a silent alarm i think which just notifies the police.

I think a sign saying: TRESSPASSERS WILL BE SHOT, FED TO THE DOGS, THEN BURIED ALIVE IN THE BACK YARD would also do the trick to act as a detterant.

Bollards/Gates etc.. if they get into your house looking for the keys, they will get the access tools for these devices as well. There was a documentary once following the flying squad around london monitoring this gang of car thieves, and there was a Subaru Impreza with a clever immobiliser device, and they couldn't start the thing, so they went back into the house where they had just taken the keys at gun point, literally dragged the bloke down the stairs and across his driveway and forced him to put in the pin and show them how to start the thing.. BASTARDS.. Twisted Evil

Agreed, but what Kam is rightly saying is that you'll be stuck with the ABH charge for smacking the burglar round the head with your 9 Iron. That's the ridiculous part.

Nah guys..don't get me wrong.. my long range and somewhat powerful air rifle would come into play if i spotted anyone downstairs or trying to get access to our property... but i just think its ridiculous that we can't rightly defend ourselves/family/property even in the worst case scenarios such as whats happened here..

I wish for once we did follow the american view point on this and have these rights of property/self defence..and not have to think twice about what is fundamentaly a right of ours.
