On my rrs i have noticed that when you put it into drive and pull away there seems to be a bit of slack before it takes up drive, also when going from reverse to forward when manovering and you dont acctually stop between gearshifts,also when pulling away at some down hill junctions. My p38 was much smoother than this.
Is this a coomon thing has any body else noticed it. some of my Previous cars

Hi Rob Mine was in for other warranty work yesterday and to check the gearbox and drive train, ill give you two guesses what they said,

1. its F****D we will fit you a new one or
2. Its fine we could,nt find any problems and have a nie day

Hi RobT = I have been using trinity in Hinckley for over 12mths on my Supercharged. They have always sorted any issues I have 100% - eventually

This may not apply to you, but FWIW in North America a service bulletin addressing harsh transmission downshifts from 2nd to 1st gear came out on September 12, TSB # LS307-002. It only affects 4.4 liter gas engines, and should also be "cured" by the VEP SB034-B036. Perhaps there is a similar bulletin in the UK for diesel engines? Here is text of the TSB:

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
Range Rover Sport (LS) (4.4L AJV8 engine only) VIN: 6A900129 to 6A968757
CONDITION SUMMARY:
TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFT FROM 2ND TO 1ST GEAR IS HARSH
Situation: A customer may report a concern that the gearshift is harsh and results in a thump or bump when the transmission shifts from 2nd to 1st gear. This condition occurs when the throttle is applied following a deceleration where the vehicle is slowing to a near stop. This condition can be intermittent and can vary depending upon the amount of throttle that is applied.
An automatic transmission software calibration issue may be the cause.
NOTE: Service Action B036 – Tune Updates and Enhancement Repairs may apply and resolve this concern. DDW must be first checked to determine which vehicles within the affected VIN range of this bulletin require B036 to be completed in lieu of this bulletin.
This bulletin is not to be completed or claimed if B036 is completed and claimed.
Refer to the latest issue of Technical Service Bulletin SB036 as applicable.
Action: Should a customer express this concern, and B036 does not apply, verify the condition and refer to the Repair Procedure detailed in this bulletin to update the control module software.

I had this exact issue on an early 2006 FFRR (don't flame me yet...there's a reason I think it's relevant).

When I posted the symptoms, a number of others came out of the woodwork (it was on a FFRR forum). It was a kerthunking of response when starting from stopped, or very slow roll at a stop sign, but only when going uphill or downhill.

This problem was fixed on the 2nd time back to my dealer by doing a transmission re-programming. Note though, that LR released at least 4 updates to the transmission before they got it right...the last one (release within the last month) was the charm.

Now there is nothing in common between the FFRR 06 and the RRS, but this just sounds too similar:

and I quote:
"No, you're crazy, there's nothing wrong. remember you're just the customer"

"Well, I do feel something, but that's normal" (what, it's a feature?)

"OK, you're right, it is a problem, but we've reprogrammed the transmission and now you're all set"

"Ah, well actually there's a new update, why don't we reprogram the transmission..."

When we all ganged up on LR, we finally had enough data to close the loop.

I hope your solution is ... er .. quicker, but equally satisfying.
