MOT warning

Just a heads up for anyone with a p400e RRS and possibly other models. Due to the Gross Vehicle Weight of 3200kg the car requires a category 5 MOT which many garages can’t do. I only found this out when I took mine down today as my previous RRS (3.0 SDV6) was fine, but thankfully another garage can fit me in tomorrow. Nobody from JLR ever mentioned that when I got the car and I’ve not see it mentioned on here either so thought I’d let everyone know.

United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Zermatt Silver

Interesting. And, whilst it doesn't affect my RRS, I did a bit of searching. It seems from my limited search to be a grey area as the primary reason for Class 5 appears to be if the vehicle is a "Private passenger vehicles and ambulances (13-16 passenger seats, and more than 16 passenger seats)" or a "Play bus" - whatever that is. There also seems to be a further grey area as "Dual Purpose Vehicles", it appears, can be up to 3500kg with a class 4 MoT. Dual purpose seems to be ones that can carry passengers or freight. Then I noticed that Class 7 is also an option if your vehicle weighs over 3000kg. All in all it sounds like a minefield of confusion. No doubt someone with greater ex[pertise can clarify this whole thing... Robin

So, got mine done yesterday at another garage and asked them what class it was. They looked surprised and said “Class 4 - it’s a car”. I explained what had happened at the first garage and they said it might just have been their ramp that wasn’t rated high enough. However my car only weighs about 2.5 tons so it seems unlikely. The 3.2 tons GVW is the maximum permissible weight including passengers and load, which is not how the car is most of the time, so it sounds like the first garage either got it wrong or couldn’t be bothered doing it. Either way, it passed without any issues.
