Home > General > How Much Better Can a L494 or Later Be |

It's the classic conundrum - even if the newer vehicles are objectively and subjectively better, are they better enough to justify the not-insubstantial cost of changing. A 2010 isn't going to be worth very much even if sold privately but to replace it with a much younger vehicle is going to cost quite a bit, relative to the value of the 2010. If the subjective improvements are worth that cost to you then it's worth doing. If they aren't then it isn't. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Without a doubt the L494 is an improvement in all departments, but you have to decide on the cost/benefits. 2023 P440e SE Dynamic on order -cancelled

It might be considered a downgrade in terms of practicality for some - the under-seat storage in the L320, for example, is very useful and something I will miss when I eventually leave the L320 behind. Likewise rear seats that fold to give a true flat floor for carrying bulky stuff, tip runs, etc..

I had a 2012 AB Sport before my L494 and certainly miss a few things about it. I would say it was quieter, had 2 glove boxes, rear seats fold totally flat, storage under the rear seats (not much) the parking heater had a remote control rather than a stupid app on my phone, I liked the rotary gear shift change thing. The L494 is much faster, a tad more economical I think, has more toys like HUD, park assist (even though I’ve never used it) and lots more things that I can’t remember. I’m glad I changed from old shape to new but still have fond memories of my old one. I’ve seen L494s now for £10k so a lot of car for not a lot of money. |

Yes I get all of the points above better packaging, more toys (most of which are useless). But in terms of the engine/driving smoothness, low-speed handling dynamics, etc are they that much better. I doubt not.

Afternoon folks, Just returned to the Range Rover fold after a brief flirt with Audi. I come with a word of caution. Picked up a 2021 Sport HSE Dynamic in as new condition 2 days ago. so im sat in the car with the engine running getting familiar with all the toys and its time to finish and go inside. Before i have a tracker fitted i thought i would utilise a steering wheel lock for a bit of secuity so i fitted it and removed the key. Time to go so press the start button to stop engine which immediatley motored the wheel upward and broke the windscreen with the arm of the steering lock. To say im sick is putting it mildly.

The majority of Land Rovers and Range Rovers ever produced are not V8s, so...not sure of your point. Having said that, I did have the TDV8 and it's a great engine. Always happier and most reliable when doing decent miles each day - when I was doing 30k miles a year it was very happy.
I'm 6ft1in and have the seat basically fully back normally. I have to move the seat forward a little but it's certainly not "almost fully forward" and is still driveable. The space under the rear seats is great for stuff like tyre inflator, jump leads, tow rope, fire extinguisher - stuff I don't want rattling around in the boot, taking up room. If that's not stuff you want to carry then great. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

Hi Meiang Not sure if you have changed or not yet but here's my 4 penith worth on the subject We have had 4 L494's in the family while still running our old L320 and I can honestly say that the 494 is far better than the 320 in all ways except one and that one is the fact that the seats in the 494's do not fold flat as they do in the 320 and thats why we kept it and still do now having changed to a 461. The 4, 494's, including a P460e, have only ever let us down once and that was for the gear selector button breaking, apart from that no issues what so ever and are as good in the mud etc as the 320, and I do take mine wherever they need to go regardless of conditions. Now, if you were to ask if the 461 is better than the 494, then I would have to think hard about that one as there are a few things that are a not as good and well thought out. 2023 D350 FIRST EDITION, SANTORINI WITH CLOUD/EBONY 2024 DEFENDER D250 110 HSE APACHE 2009 2.7 TDV6 HSE SANTORINI BLACK GONE 2020 RRS P400e AUTOGRAPHY 2018 3.0 SDV6 AUTOBIOGRAPHY, CARPATHIAN GREY, SANTORINI PAN ROOF, IVORY INTERIOR. I take your points on all the issues raised but I also have a Honda Civic which is 19 years old and all I have ever done is oil changes, it has more useable room than the L320 RRS, is more fuel efficient, handles better etc etc but it does not have the V8. In fact none of your vehicles have had the V8, just the V6 so you have no argument or experience that the L494 is a much better vehicle. |

I've still got my L320 and there's no doubt in my mind that it fits our lifestyle better than any of the subsequent models. As you've all said, folds flat in the rear plus, I'd add that the load height is far better (lower) than the later cars. Much better for the dogs.

I agree with most of the above on L320 vs L494. The 494 feels like an upgrade in quality and refinement, it’s quieter, the trim is higher quality and the ride quality is massively better. The 8sp is a step up from the 6sp, particularly in manual mode. The stereo is much better, sat nav is actually usable.
