D250 engine

Just starting to think about a new RRS and have seen they now do a D250 engine in S spec. The spec difference is not an issue as I can add options to make up any shortfall (eg pixel headlights) but I’m wondering what the engine islike compared to the D300. I assume it’s the same basic engine with the D250 having been detuned, but does anyone know if the 50bhp difference is that noticeable? Would 250bhp feel underpowered? For reference I’ve had a RRS with the old 3.0d v6 and am currently running a p400e, and both have 300+bhp (but very different driving styles) and never felt they were underpowered. But 250…? Not so sure.

I’d imagine it will feel much smoother than the P400e as in my experience of it, once the battery ran out it felt strained and out of breath. In comparison the D300 in my MY24 is really smooth and creamy with a nice burble (probably through the speakers) when pressing on. In common with most diesels there’s little benefit to be gained from revving it hard and there’s adequate performance for overtaking. So given its lugging the same weight I’d imagine the D250 may feel a little underwhelming. By the time you’ve specced an S to SE standard you’ll nearly be at the same price?

Hi,

We’ve had the D250 in SWMBO’s Defender 90 for just over three years.

Lovely engine and does everything we want.

Have the D300 in my AB. That’s good as well, personally, I went AB spec and the D300.

If worried about the D250, look at what it will cost you for a D300 compared to an uplifted “S” spec and make your call.

I doubt you’ll be disappointed, bearing in mind the early V6’s were 255 hp and the V8’s were 272 bhp - and weighed 400kg’s more!

The D250 can be mapped to 300bhp if it's an issue, although I don't know if it affects reliability, etc. There was a thread about it recently which never got to the bottom of whether there are any mechanical differences between the D250, D300 and D350. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
