I have a RR Sport L320 built in June 2011. It’s the ‘facelifted’ later L320 with the single piece tailgate.

While doing some other work, I had to remove the interior trim of the tailgate. I was surprised to see that it has the electric tailgate control unit, and other, related parts. The wiring loom is complete with all of the connectors necessary for the electric tailgate. The only parts absent are the two electric struts, the manual switch to initiate closing, and the ‘override inertia switch’. (See the attached photo from the workshop manual.)

So my plan is to buy the struts, and the two switches and then, if necessary, pay my local specialist to reprogram as necessary. BUT … I can find no reference to the ‘override inertia switch’ anywhere online. I’ve no idea what it looks like and know no part number. All I know is what I can get from the workshop manual: it plugs into a green connector numbered C3737. That’s not much to go on!

Can anybody help me source an override inertia switch?
Does anybody know a part number?
Can anybody tell me whether it’s necessary for the electric tailgate to operate?

If the powered struts and closing switch are missing, how do you lift and close the tailgate?

Switch, item no.4 has a green connector from the harness.

– Unlatch — concealed switch/handle above the number plate/dash button/key fob button
– Lift with assistance from the original, unpowered struts.
– Close by pulling down on the tailgate handle.
– Latch is automatic, powered by the latch motor.

I think you’re saying that the manual close switch IS the ‘inertia override switch’. Yes?

That switch on mine (LR025424) certainly has a green connector from the harness, can you see the connector through the cut out for the switch on the lower edge of the tailgate trim? That's the only switch that seems to be listed in the tailgate it's self, interesting as they do list manual struts for later cars Vin No. CA000001 on which I thought was about when they started fitting the one piece tailgate, maybe it was a option on later vehicle to have either manual or auto strut's on it, looks like the strut top mounting bracket may be different as well, have you got a picture of the strut mountings on your vehicle by any chance?

I wouldn't bother messing around with it. In my experience, half of the time the hatch unlatches but doesn't lift, or it'll lift a bit then stop, and a minority of the time will it work properly. And there's no remote close on it (although someone did lash up a way of doing that, I think), so you still need to press the button on the hatch to close it.

It just feels like an option put in to make it feel more "luxurious" but, being JLR, it's a half-arsed job. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I can't speak for anyone else, but In my experience the tailgate on mine has failed to open twice in 11 years of ownership and a new switch sorted that, the "lash up" remote has worked perfectly since it was fitted in March 2016 over 8 years ago which is actually longer than some factory fitted component have lasted like some TDV6 engines for example.

Mine will unlatch and fail to open either on the key and on the button at various times (opens on the dash button every time, however). Pain in the butt. I'd rather have the old manual tailgate with the opening glass section from my old TDV8, thanks. A more useful thing but, I guess, not luxurious enough. LR have reduced the practicality with every increase in luxury over the years, IMO. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Couple of picture of the strut mountings on mine, lower mounting looks very similar, top one looks as so it may be slightly different shape although the strut is obscuring it slightly.

If the picture is correct this is the top R/H mounting bracket listed for the powered strut , the L/H one is LR030939, not sure how it compares to the shape of the R/H bracket on your vehicle? Part No. LR030894 R/H & LR030805 L/H appear to be the ones listed for the one piece tailgate with standard gas struts.

I think we’ve been using ‘top’ and ‘bottom’ in opposite ways to each other! You seem to be referring to them in position with the tailgate closed, so I’ll change to your designation.

That being the case, thanks, it’s useful to know that the top mounting plates are available (in case I have trouble as a consequence of corrosion fitting new electric struts to the old balls).

Do you have an opinion about genuine LR v. aftermarket struts? Have you had to change yours and if so what did you buy? RR Sport SE SDV6 (first registered July 2011)

I'm currently at the bottom of the world so the could explain the confusion in position. I can't really say a preference on genuine or aftermarket replacement struts as I have never had a issue with mine, personally I would probably go for genuine rather than cheap crap of the likes of fleabay unless I could find the o.e. manufacturer, but never having to replace them have had no need to get a comparison in quality and price between suppliers.

I did wonder if there is a slight difference in the top bracket's due to the larger diameter of the power struts to give more clearance from the bodywork.
