It’s to do with rebroadcasting a signal from the key to the car.. the early cars are susceptible to this whereas the later ones use a different system.. however what the later cars are vulnerable to is Can injection where the thief removes a component or cuts a hole in the bodywork (normally the plastic boot lid ) to gain access to the canbus wiring .. there are devices which burst signals into the wiring which opens the doors and starts the car..
The thefts are mainly happening in the big cities, London , Manchester and Birmingham which is why insurance went through the roof..
If you live in the countryside then relax… if you live in a city then fit a Ghost immobiliser or secondary non oem alarm…
The thieves want to maximise their profit…(this is their day job) thus were targeting late cars for export. If you have an early car then the demand is a lot less… so relax…

I surmise this is now starting to spread due to most LR owners living in London having had the security updates done which are now resistant to this type of theft… I know JLR were concentrating on city owners as they were the highest risk…

Shame they didn’t show year of car as that would have offered interesting information as well as locations.
