United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Bonatti Grey
Well I thought it was interesting…

So me and the wife went out to a car boot sale this morning.

It’s near Alton and on a hillside (strangely that’s it’s name, who’d have thought).

The grass was very wet and slippery and as you can imagine a lot of cars were struggling but what I thought was interesting was that how many 4x4 suv’s that were making a meal of it and a lot of them gave up and rolled away in shame.

Now I’m definitely no expert off road and my car 2016 RRS 3.0L V6 diesel with standard tyres and apart from turning the helpful knob to grass & snow I drove straight up the hill without so much as a slip and then backed into a spot.

Then we sat and watched an X5, Volvo XC 60, VW something, Skoda something and 2 Audi’s.

Has anyone else ever had a similar experience?

Don't get me wrong I know that these things in the most part are way more capable than we need them to be and as "Pistnbroke" said it's happened before, I also have a 2004 SWB Mitsubishi Shogun (Stubby) with all terrain tyres that has pulled many, many people out of fields and the odd ditch it even pulled a small coach out of a grass/mud car park once...
It was more the fact of how bad the other cars/drivers were doing, they were making a proper dogs dinner of it... Rolling with laughter

The UK average IQ is as you say,100 but, although it would cost a fortune to calculate it, it has been estimated through batch testing that 70% of the UK pop is above average. 2017 3.0 SDV6 HSE

He put it in grass mode which will lock the centre diff as necessary. But the centre diff will lock anyway if there is a speed difference between a front and rear wheel.

X5, XC60, some VWs, some Skodas, some Audis are all wheel drive.

I've seen old Defenders/Series with chunky tyres struggle on wet grass. If there's no grip then there's no grip. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I thought I should turn it on as I would’ve felt a complete knob if I didn’t and got stuck… Then to be asked why didn’t you turn on the terrain response.

All of the cars mentioned were all wheel drive as you could see the wheels spinning as they slid off the hill.
I know that there’s a difference between all wheel drive and 4 wheel drive, I just thought that they’d do a bit better job of it.
And like you say it’s all about grip or the lack there of… nobody had chunky tyres.

LR's traction control system is one of the best there is - off road ability on what are basically road tyres is their USP these days. As you nicely demonstrated. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

To get mine to this point I had to go threw a flooded underpass tunnel, not as bad as it has been. Plough threw some deep muddy ruts left by the farms tractors and all the other boys 4x4 trucks. Didn't miss a beat I didn't alter the terrain response just put it in off road height, their faces were a pretty picture as I pulled up in standard road tyres.

I've yet to get stuck - had 2 or 3 moment where it was touch and go but got out unassisted. The worst was soaking wet grass with that thin layer of slick mud that forms on the surface of the ground around the grass. Like ice. Horrible stuff. It was on the same trip as this:

But this mud was easier to get around on than the soaking wet grass (of which I don't have a photo). This was the company we were in. I was on Grabber AT that day. I saw a couple of the others having some slides on the wet grass.

This was on Pirelli ATR - not much more than a road tyre really. The only "will it go?" moment that day was a bit where there was a layer of rotting leaves. Again, behaved a bit like slick ice.

Otherwise, had a couple of moments on local farms when helping with sheep in very wet conditions, and shooting (where we'd driven the week before on frozen ground but once defrosted it turned in to really nasty slop). 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Cool photos!
My Shogun has Grabber AT3’s on it… pretty much unstoppable.

The AT3 is a good AT. I have run them in the past although I have the Goodyear Wrangler AT Adventurer currently. I think they fit it to the new Defender when "off road" tyres are spec'd from the factory. Not winter rated in LR sizes, annoyingly, but then we haven't had any winter this year so I haven't missed that feature. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I run at3s on my fullfat and wildpeak on our d3 I'm thinking of a set of wildpeaks on my spare wheels for the sport for the winter stuff when I'm out shooting.
