I'm trying to take a private plate off a car (in my name) and put it straight onto another car.

I'm having difficulty finding the exact online form to do this!

Anyone give me some pointers please ?

I don't think you can do this in one more unless you do it by post.

It keeps asking for numbers I don't have . e.g.

the online retention service,
the V750 certificate of entitlement or
the V778 retention document.

which are numbers in 4 groups

I've had nothing but problems with the DVLA for the last month or so.

I had to remove a number off my old car and pay the retention fee of £80.00 and I'm still waiting on the new V5 so I can assign it to the new one.

DVLA really seem to be dragging their heels on this one. They make it even more difficult for you if you're disabled too; i.e. couldn't do the tax online and had to go to a Post Office.

I purchased a used jag from a main dealer.
I must say the logbook process was very efficient.

Done electronically these days. I had an email as soon as I purchased it, and the actual logbook turned up within 5 days. I couldn’t believe it.

That's been my experience with previous purchases too - they've always been very good.

I think they must have the 'newbie' on this one . . .

Does anyone know if you can take a personal plate off & put it on retention & substitute it with with another personal plate immediately or does it have to go back to the original plate, wait on the new V5, then assign the new plate then get another replacement v5.

Seams a bit more risky to me. But worth ago in your case

I have recently taken mine off a car and then put it on my new RRS.

The key thing is that you must remove it from the old car first, pay your £80 and then wait for the retention document to come in the post, it’s usually only a few days, then you can put the cherished number onto your new car.

You will get a new V5 for the old car so that you can get the plates made.

I have found the process to be very quick and easy, I have 3 cars with cherished plates and no bother moving the number. 2022 P510e RRS AB Frenze Red

RR Ally, That's not what I was asking. You were putting it on a different car. I have done this plenty times before, but the car you are taking it off reverts to the original registration
I want to take off a personal plate & retain it, but want to assign another personal plate to the same car, missing out the step of it reverting to the original registration

I believe you can do it online in 2 steps.

Remove the plate and retain it. Either for 1,2,etc. years (was the case 8 years ago)
Yes, it gets the old number plate for a few minutes.

The transfer the plate onto the car.

Check out what reference numbers you require for the second part before you start
