Excess wheel movement on due to steering rack (and clunky)

As with my rrs, works perfectly till I go on a longish journey.
Initially It had stiffish suspension, like it was stuck on dynamic mode. I checked the usual suspects, no issues.
I've been away for a long weekend, on the motorway I developed a vibration, and a wobble at slow speed. It then became very clunky. I assumed my upper front ball joint on the passanger side had given up.
As the car became more wobbly at slow speeds and vibrating at high speed, the steering corrected its self.
Now home, jacked up the vehicle, expecting to find a knackered upper front ball joint, no issues at all. So thought I will check the bearings, no issue.
I've found I have 4mm play on the passanger wheel, from the steering rack, the track rod end Is fine but I have movement on the full steering arm, when securing the opposite wheel.
Anyone have any suggestions? or am I looking at a new steering rack.
Thanks in advance

Just an update, taken another look and I'm thinking the inner joint on the track rod could be faulty, but I'm going to ensure the steering rack has no movement. MY12 RRS HSE

Sorry for digging up an old thread but did you ever get to the bottom of this? Mine has slight play in the rack... initially i also thought it was the track rod ball joint but when i removed the gaitor the ball joint itself was fine and the movement was in the rack itself. I also get alot of noise from the car, like a rotational knock, i assuming the front diff was giving me the noise until i saw your description.
Regards
