Good Morning Folks,

After my N/S/R tyre issue on Monday and having to run on the spare for a day, I have now decided to get a full size spare.

To be honest, I've not thought about this before but, I'm assuming that I would really need to run a multi directional tyre on the spare to cater for either side of the vehicle.

Hi,

You need the full size spare to be the same type & brand as your other four tyres if you intend to use it as a fifth wheel and not just a temporary spare.

The problem is that my tyres, like most, are directional, so fitting a similar tyre on the spare will mean that there would be a 50% chance that it'll be fitted in the wrong direction.

So if by using this spare, if it could be used being directional, how long could you run it for as a temporary measure only (fitted in the wrong direction).

I'd buy a non-directional tyre. Directional tyres are designed to rotate in one direction and have this marked on the tyre sidewall. But whichever way you go, look to replace the damaged tyre ASAP so that use of the spare is as short a time period as possible. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

The amount of tires I’ve seen on the wrong direction for who knows how many thousands of miles before I saw it and nobody died from it can’t even be counted with my fingers, toes and even pants down. Is it ideal? No. However, it’s totally survivable in temporary situation. Worse case you can have it swapped to the normal wheel the correct way if the shop doesn’t have that exact tire. Born and raised in So Cal. Moved to the UK in 2018 for a few years. Now in Poland and looking at moving back to the UK.

Are you sure your tyres are fully directional, and not simply those that have to be fitted on the rim the correct way round and can be fitted to either the O/S or N/S of the car. Find a spare rim with a pirelli verde fitted and problem solved anyway.

Don't forget to fit an anti-theft plate, otherwise you'll be buying your new spare wheel back off an aution site sooner than you know it!

So when did it become law in the UK that all tyres on the vehicle including the spare had to be the same brand of tyre, It may have changed now but I though the only legal requirement was you cannot mix Xply and radial tyres on the same axle, in addition they have to be the same size/rating tyre on the same axle. If it is a legal requirement I think there are a awful lot of illegal cars out there.

It didn't, that's utter rubbish, however I wouldn't put it past tyre centres saying it is to fleece customers that don't know better.
