Your starter motor failed at ??? Miles

Have an 09 with 106k on it and the only part not been changed by previous owner is the Starter motor.
My normal policy is to change parts that I cannot change at the side of the road in France so what have you guys found?
I just bought a second hand one for £20 inc post and intend to change the solenoid and brushgear and either fit it or carry as a spare when on continental trips. Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.

At the risk of tempting fate, my current 149k miles SDV6 is on its original starter motor and my previous TDV8 was on its original when I sold it at 175k miles. Both were bought as second hand at c.50k miles so I assume both were original. The TDV8 needed a new alternator at c.60k miles. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I suspect in the UK the average journey might be 20 miles or less but america a lot more (??). So 100k miles would be 500 starts in UK so perhaps 1000 starts would be its life.
So the one I bought when it arrives is from an 05 so will be interesting to see how much life is left in the brushes and condition of the commutator. Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.

The starter seems to be up to the job, basically, unlike some of the alternators which seemed to be consumable items at one point. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I purchased a second hand starter for £20 inc post from an 07
Removal of the brush box cover showed the brushes hardly worn maybe 10% and the commutator in great shape.
Bearings for the pinion Good.
So I replaced the solenoid as you cannot dismantle due to the case being peened over for £30 and I have a spare as all the other major things have been changed.
Will fit when weather improves. Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.
