Ignition Switch Fault???

Recently I noticed that my dashcam (Thinkware F770) seemed to keep switching itself on and off as I was driving along. I've had it a number of years and so thought it had maybe reached the end of it's useful life.

However, this morning I went to start the RRS and the turnover was very sluggish albeit that it did fire up. I had to move it off the drive so that the window fitters could get their van in so I took it for a short spin to warm it up a bit. I noticed that I had a warning light for Parking Brake Fault. I thought it best to put the trickle charger on it in case a low battery was creating the fault. Just been out to check on how the charger was doing and noticed that the coolbox was humming. Yes I had left it on (as I often do) but I thought it stayed off unless the engine was running. So my questions are:

Does the coolbox run when the car is unlocked?

Would a low battery create a EPB fault?

Could I be looking at a bigger problem involving a wider electrical issue perhaps to do with the ignition switch not fully closing all services down when the car is locked? Robin

Not sure about the pre-facelift but my facelift the coolbox will run with the car unlocked and without the engine running but the ignition has to be on, but if you get out of the car and close the door with the ignition left on it does switch the ignition off and obviously the coolbox, if that makes sense, but as it's keyless start/entry it may be totally different.

Cheers
Col

Thanks for the info Col. Yes, it may be different. But even so I would have thought that ignition off would have shut down the coolbox no matter what year of car. Just so that you didn't run down the battery. I know that I have left the car overnight unlocked (cos I forgot to lock it) and there has been no battery problem in the morning. So I am still leaning towards some fundamental change in the behaviour of the car and its ignition system. Just checked and the CTEK charger has almost completed its charge cycle so I'll have another look this afternoon. Might be a trip to my indie to have codes read... Robin

OK - update. Battery charged. EPB fault has disappeared. I still have an issue with the dash cam rebooting all the time but will see how it fares on a journey to Kent and back tomorrow. Perhaps it is just the dash cam Embarassed

Just goes to show that before you start taking out a second mortgage to cover garage costs, it's worth checking number 1, the battery. And of course number 2 would be the brake light switch and number 3, the bulbs in the rear light cluster. Only then start to panic.

Fingers crossed for a good run tomorrow. Robin

Have you tried playing about with the camera battery voltage and recording settings at all to see if changes anything. Shame so far away has I have the F770 here that I took out of mine when upgraded to the U1000 you would have been welcome to try as never likely to use it again.

Cheers

I have a coolbox from a 2006 in mine and they come on when voltage is over 13v. However, they should be ignition switched, so something is going on there. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

Thanks for the offer Col. We nearly did get together a few years ago when SWMBO and I did the NZ Cruise. Maybe next time. Good call on the settings - I'll check.

Interesting that you upgraded to the U1000. I like the F770 but it does have a few infuriating foibles. It insists on emphasising the word "Camera" when warning of mobile speed camera zones. So it says: "mobile speed CAMERA zone" and it does this every 200 yards or so whilst you are in the zone (which could be many miles long) and it does this even if you are not exceeding the speed limit. It should say "mobile SPEED CAMERA zone" and it doesn't need to remind you if you are not exceeding the speed limit. Does the U1000 do a similar thing? Robin

Yes, it is a bit weird. Hopefully by a process of elimination, I'll track it down Robin

Hi Robin, have actualy changed the U1000 for the U3000 now so have that spare as well got a 800pro here as well Laughing , yeah I can remember the F770 doing something like that when still in the UK, got fed up with it so disabled it in the menu if I remember right. Always found the Thinkware cameras spot on, but personaly think they do have a few to many setting options which are more of a gimmick than of use so disable them rather than them keep beeping at me. Laughing

Cheers

May be worth looking at the CJB for water damage since the coolbox fuse is in there. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory
