Front Brake Refurbish

Eh up all,

Well in between jobs elected to change front discs n pads ( big shout to Bodsys Brake Bible ) Thumbs Up

I’m no lightweight but FM Censored my caliper bolts must have been put on by a Silverback Shocked

I needed a breaker bar and a metre scaff pole I keep to get enough leverage 🥵

To be fair discs n pads were about 50% they weren’t bad but picked up Febi discs and pads for £130.00 which I thought was ok and for the effort worth replacing

Decided to do a clean up of all components, stripped fronts back including dust shields

Did a quick spray of dust shield with upon gravi guard.

Dremel on caliper carrier and calipers themselves, vht black gloss enamel on both

Looks a lot better now I think.

I refurbed some Brembo four piston calipers not too long ago and put them on my 2011.

Born and raised in So Cal. Moved to the UK in 2018 for a few years. Now in Poland and looking at moving back to the UK.

Quality job on them, I am looking at upgrades but cash is king and I ain’t got any 🤨🤣

Was tempted to do my callipers red but given condition, opted for gloss black as a quick ish refurb

Really need to do backs next bit this epb is putting me off🙁

The horror stories I’m reading are making me think can I do this.

I’m happy with spanner’s all day long , but I don’t want to bu88er the epb up.

More reading required and no doubt question on here - it’s an October job .

What’s to screw up the EPB? Just need to get it into service mode (dismount I think it is) so the EPB is retracted, then go for it. And that’s only if you plan to remove the rotors. It’s still drum/rotor so not affecting doing the regular disc brakes. Plus the parking brake shoes could probably use an adjustment.

The four piston Brembos tend to be cheap (mine were free) and are a straight bolt on for the standard 10-13 brakes. Only other part I changed was getting a 10-13 brake pad wear sensor for the Brembo calipers.

You probably want to do preventative maintenance on the epb.
Make sure the shoe lever is free to move.
Adjust them to spec

Thanks for heads up on the epb, I’m just being cautious used to the BMW set up and that looks very similar Very Happy

Planning on pads and discs changing plus a tidy up on the calipers.

Will keep a look out for the brembos- never knew it was a straight bolt on though - that’s good to know Thumbs Up

Must admit fancy the red calipers on mine

Just finished off drivers side tonight, bolting back together tomorrow after flatting the rear bumper back.

If you get Brembo 4 piston calipers from 2005-2009 they’re a straight swap less the wear sensor and pads (obviously). If you get Brembo 6 piston calipers from 2010+ you need new rotors as well and the dust shields will barely fit, sort of.

Since I could get the Brembo 4 piston calipers free (needed to be refurbed/rebuilt) this was a much more economical choice for me. The red is a nice little splash of color on my Fuji White RRS with gloss black wheels. One thing I particularly like about the Brembos is they look massive behind the wheels. Eh up all,

I’ve had a daft question, I changed pads n discs a week or so ago.

After I finished I did not start the car just pumped the foot brake to centre the pads to the discs and left it.

Not started car at all since as been spraying my bumper, finished that and rebuilt it tonight.

After making sure everything thing was re connected jumped in car with a smile Very Happy

Tried to start car as normal- all lights on - check complete but would not start Sad

Jumped out locked / opened and repeated - same result all check lights on - but not start Shocked

Took a breath - thought about it - tried again and message came up press foot brake to start. (I was doing)

So applied more pressure to brake and started - 😅

Let it run a while - moved popped into reverse and it would not move Big Cry Big Cry - seemed as if brake was on, Applied EPB - disengaged EPB all normal. Put in drive and applied more throttle- car moved and was if front brakes had stuck on. Exclamation

Struck into reverse and all good , drove it a few metres in out of garage and brakes fine, no warning lights at all.

Switched off and tried again to start - all started as normal Very Happy

What did I do wrong.

Only thing I can think of is when I centred the brakes (with the engine of ) and just pushed the brake pedal down it screwed with the electronics and it could not sense or register that my foot was on the foot brake to start .

I want to avoid a repeat of this excitement Censored when I do the rears

I’m hoping it’s back to normal will fully test drive tomorrow when bumper is re fitted completely

Any thoughts or advice welcome - my ar53 fell out when it happened Rolling with laughter

It is a range rover so probably having a fit of the miseries having been parked for a few day's, Laughing perhaps things had got a bit damp if parked up outside for a few days.

Mine did the same. Think it looks for the switch signal and pressure. With everything being changed it may not initially see the pressure side. No issue since, just know it may occur when you do brakes.

Col - I hope it’s just thrown a wobble - given it’s been inside doubt it’s damp but ....appears ok

NoExpert - That’s a massive relief I thought I’d really cocked it up Whistle

I finished bumper fittings but too dark for pictures will post tomorrow and took it for a spin, started fine, importantly stopped ok Thumbs Up

No hissy fits to report "................yet, in those imports words its thinking “I’ll be back” Rolling with laughter

Next jobs are rears and whatever else anyone recommends on a 12 plate 100k SDV6 - ( that leaves a wide platform for comments)
