Can you help me with the choice of engine

Hi

I have at the moment a 4.4 v8 RR diesel, but really it is not the car for me as I am retired and mostly do short journeys. Love the car but always have the worry of oil dilution. Looking to have a Sport and looking to spend £40k with part ex my car. I usually go approved as I want the LR warranty . My question is what petrol engine would you go for? Thanks

To be brutally honest, a Sport isn't the car for you if you're doing short journeys. They don't like that sort of use really. You'd be better off with a hybrid or even an EV. Is £40k the total budget or is it £40k+Part Ex? If so, how much is the current car worth?

£40k gets you a choice of two Approved Used Sports on LR's website at the moment. A 2.0L or a 5.0L. If your total goes up to £50k, you can get a V6 petrol and even an SVR. For short journeys and thus fuel cost being less of an issue, why not go for a V8 petrol and enjoy the performance in short bursts? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Thanks for that. My 2017 RR is worth £29k and I can add between £10k to £15k. The sport won’t be all short journeys, as I have a small classic sport car for that, but I don’t want to feel restricted in not doing short journeys. I love the drive of the RR , especially on long journeys, it just the oil dilution with diesel just does my head in. I therefore looking for the best engine to do short journeys and the occasional long journeys. I know you can ask non approved dealers to get the multi inspection done by LR so you can get their warranty , but in reality how many non approved dealers are agreeable to that.

I'd look further afield than LR dealerships - you can buy aftermarket warranties if that is a concern and, by going elsewhere, you'll probably get a cheaper deal too.

Looking on Autotrader, for example, there are 30-40 petrol RRS in the £30-40k range, but they are basically all 5.0 V8 - there's a 2.0 petrol and a 3.0 petrol (with a very red interior). You're quite limited.

Have you considered getting a diesel and then just changing the oil more frequently? If you're doing short journeys, that would be a good thing to do even if dilution wasn't an issue. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

With my experience with Land Rover- I don’t think other warranties are worth the paper they’re written. Any problems with my car , Land Rover pay up straight away to the garage so there is no need to claim back. I will consider all options, no rush as I still love the car I have. Thanks for replying.

I won't let a Land Rover garage touch mine, no matter who's paying for the work.

If you love your current one, why change it? You can get a lot of oil changes for £10-15k. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

You are right! I would not have LR dealers wind up my watch. Although the warranty is worth it. I have a good Land Rover specialist ( Promec ) . I will keep it.
