RRS 2012 V6 117,000 miles on the clock.

Have occasionally been getting an amber engine monitoring light on the dash. Took it to get diagnostics done today and it turns out I’m having an issue with one of the EGR valves being stuck shut.

Was recommended to get them remapped (not sure what this means).

I asked if this is something I need to be getting fixed ASAP - but was told it’s not a big deal.

What should I be doing here?

If it's sticky, you may wish to try some Wyns EGR cleaner (fuel additive) ASAP

But, as you say it's not really urgent to replace the value itself.
May need to be done before MOT/Inspection. If ECU lights or fault codes will cause a failure

I have a stupid question; how is a fuel additive supposed to have an effect on EGR’s? I would think anything beneficial would be consumed during combustion. It may help with the fuel system and injectors, but I just don’t see it benefitting anything post combustion.

Same with an intake cleaner, the EGR airflow is from the exhaust back into the intake, anything sprayed into the intake will be going through the combustion chamber before getting to the EGRs.

Somebody please educate me how either of these methods in fact clean the EGRs. Maybe some chemical compound can survive the combustion, I don’t know.

I was similarly sceptical as you.

However the turbo vvt cleaner worked for myself and others. Which is a fuel additive.

So I’m not going to rule out egr cleaner.

had the same with one of my egr's and as Andy says its worth having a go with an egr cleaner just to see if it works, it is a chemical reaction that tries to clean the deposits/gunk,
the wynns I used was a spray you use in the inlet with the engine running not an ad to the fuel

think you will be delaying the inevitable and replacing them later though

mine was corrosion in the motor end when I replaced and stripped it

Regarding "remapping" from what I understand this is the wrong wording they Dont remap them but apply a "Patch" to fool the car to Not put the EML on

if they only do this, its not a good way of doing things,
you really need to blank the egr's off (both) if this can be seen then it Should fail an MOT
so if blanked and pipes still in place it should be ok (for now MOT's change over time) you also need to remove the butterfly from inside the inlet manifold as well
