Pirelli Scorpion vs Scorpion Zero vs Scorpion Verde vs M+S | |
I've just got off the phone with Pirelli UK after finding their website and model range is unbelievably obtuse. For the benefit of others (especially on 275/45 R21), I've found out...
* There is a new tyre called the "Pirelli Scorpion". High Performance, Summer, NOT All Season. It's (currently?) only available in a very small range of non-LR sizes and is not LR marked.

* There is another new tyre called the "Pirelli Scorpion All Season SF2". This is a true all season tyre and is 3PMSF marked. It's available in 20 and 21" including 275/45 R21. It's not LR marked but would be suitable for trips to the French Alps (French are requiring 3PMSF marking from next year).

* There is another new tyre called the "Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season". Wait, that's not a new tyre, I had those on a Discovery 10 years ago... well they've reused the name on a new tyre and completely failed to list in on the Pirelli Scorpion family webpage. High Performance AND All Season. Allegedly developed with the new Defender so should be suitable for light offroad. Available in lots of sizes and LR marked. Also has noise cancelling foam.

* There is the OLDer "Pirelli Scorpion Verde" in summer, "Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season" (M+S but NOT 3PMSF) and "Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season SF" (3PMSF) which cover summer, all season, offroad, snow and LR and non-LR marked in one huge marketing clusterfk. They are not as"sporty" as the Scorpion Zero, not as new as the "Scorpion All Season" and are more general use / green.

In general, 3PMSF and "sporty" appear to be mutually exclusive due to the necessity of the compound required for 3PMSF.
So for a Range Rover Sport, your best choice appears to be "Scorpion Zero" for road use or "Scorpion All Season" for those who prioritise 3PMSF for the French Alps over summer driving. Or of course you could chose another brand and if you are regularly offroad or in snow, you probably want something different entirely, but let's keep this to Pirelli.
I hope this is as clear as mud, in which case it's much better than Pirelli marketing. If you have any information to the contrary, please say. I'm off to find prices for the Scorpion Zero.
