Differential rebuild - torqueing spec

Hi,

I'm rebuilding my rear differential of my 2.7 2009 RRS.
The job itself is relatively easy if you have access to a hoist, like I do...


Currently, the differential lies open, 1 bearing was shot (pitting).
Now, i'm ready to assembly again, but is there anyone who can help me on the thightening spec of the pinion shaft-nut?

Flexzor,

I had a look in the L320 workshop manual which quotes the following:

"The pinion shaft is mounted on two opposed taper roller bearings, with a collapsible spacer located between them.
The spacer is used to hold the bearings in alignment and also collapses under the pressure applied to the pinion
flanged nut. This allows the flanged nut to be tightened to a predetermined torque, which collapses the spacer,
setting the correct bearing preload."

No mention of the torque anywhere but it does say (and explain with pictures), to scribe a mark on the flange and nut prior to disassembly so that it can be reassembled to the exact same position after reassembly. Its because the spacer has been crushed to some unspecified torque on original assembly at the factory I presume.

Unfortunately, i did not write down how much turns the locking nut was turned on the pinion shaft...

I read that the preload can be checked by rotating the shaft, without differential mounted into the housing: it then should be like 2-3-4Nm torque needed to turn. Someone can give me the exact number?

Hi Flexzor,

I am having the same issue with my diff. Did you ever get any feedback regarding the torque setting and pre-load.
Also, any idea where I can get a collapsible spacer for a Disco 3 / RRS l320 front diff ( LR006011 or TAG500063)?
