Hi all,
Really stupid thought, but does anyone actually use a newer range Rover Sport off road or for farming etc? it seems such a complex beast that treating it roughly could result in major cost!

I've seen a few on shoots. I know a couple of farmers that use them as daily vehicles including out and about around the farm.

My 10 year old RRS has been off road in Spain and goes light off road for shoots, etc. But then it also gets used to carry thing with the seats down - branches for the recent Jubilee Beacon, for example, that were collected from a local farm (so some light off road work there too but nothing more than the need for ground clearance and high range). It also tows our horse trailer on road and across fields.

There are some hereabouts that have modified theirs to go off road / overlanding.

As for them being complex and costly, it usually seems to be the driveway queens that have the issues - because the systems aren't being used and so seize, etc., the battery isn't getting charged so they throw electrical wobblies, that sort of thing.

There are few vehicles that can comfortably cover the best part of 1000 miles in a couple of days and then do some reasonable off road work. The RRS can do that, along with the FFRR, the Disco and the new Defender.

But the vast majority sit on driveways at the weekend being polished. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I think you'll find mine sits on the driveway being covered in tree sap, thank you very much

New Defenders seem awfully popular around here, so I looked at the price.

The new Defender is much nicer than the old one, however. At least one can sit in it with the door closed and window shut without having to dislocate one's right shoulder.

The reality is that a new Defender will go places an old one couldn't even hope to go without resorting to the modifications so beloved of the "one life, live it" mob. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

The lane to my house, despite being short is quite steep and as its unadopted, quite rough and slippy in winter. That's about as close as I get to offroading.
I didn't buy it for its offroad performance, more for the comfort, driving position and all round good feeling that I get. Its easily the best car I have ever owned in 40 years of motoring, also the most expensive I ever bought, even at 7 years old.

Yes I do. I have a 70 plate which I use for work and that gets used for towing upto 3.5t and driving regularly across fields both rutted and very muddy. as well as towing the trailer across the fields. they are doing what they where designed for and providing you dont go stupid you are mot going to damage anything. in fact it usually means that all the electronic gizmo's etc get used so dont fail due to lack of use like the locking rear diff etc

I act for a number of farmers and regularly have to inspect their farms (fields, woods, outlying buildings) -summer and winter. My 2012 RRS with AT tyres is ideal for the job and saves a lot of walking. The only thing I avoid is anything that would damage the paintwork - hence only use wider tracks through woodland etc to avoid vegetation that would damage the paint/ bodywork. There is no replacement for displacement - W O Bentley

Don't be daft.. you just wind the window down - doesn't matter if it's raining, you're getting wet anyway even with the window up

My 2010 TDV8 goes off road every day. I need to put the suspension in off-road mode as the sand around our house is vey loose and deep enough that it would drag its belly in std mode.
I never wash it as it would be covered in dust straight after.

If your pavements are anything like they were outside my place when I lived in the UK, then yes, it counts.

Pavements you say, posh round your way we just get verges not quite full articulation
