Rear Seat Headphones - No Screens?

Back to the market looking for a ‘12/‘13 plate RRS Luxury/Red/Black Edition, a number of cars for sale have the bulbous roof mounted pod with IR sensors suggesting there are headphones/rear media but no screens in the headrests????

Can anyone advise what the purpose of having headphones in the back is if you don’t have screens?

Assuming someone is going to tell me it’s so the passengers can listen to the audio without disturbing others in the car, is it controllable from the rear or does it rely on driver?

Last question in relation to this - if I find a car I like which has this system but headphones are missing can they still be purchased and paired with the OE system??

Cheers

Yes, you can buy the Headphones separate and they do pair no problem, L/R referred to the original L320 ones as "whitefire" but the later ones from the L494 and Ewock work as well, personally I found the original one's more comfortable but are larger and more cumbersome than the later one's. I do have some sets of each here if you want a picture of the difference.

Are you sure the cars have the infrared transmitter and not the normal alarm sensor module ? the infrared transmitter is the large shinny black part. If the car has the dual view screen which I believe the Black edition did as standard although I think it was a option on all variants, that will have it, as L/R supplied one a set of headphones with the dual view for use by the passenger, if it had dual view and RSE they supplied 3 sets. I can't be certain but I'm inclined to think if rear seat passengers wore them they would simply here the same as front seat passenger, whereas with RSE they can listen/watch different media.
Not sure what you get if you plug say a Ipod into the rear AV sockets though without RSE.

Cheers

Morning Col,

Thanks for the info, that’s really useful thank you. I think the module I have seen is the IR one -

Will bear that in mind when looking, good to know still available and easy to pair.

If the dash has this Dual View button rather than one marked SetUp, I think it would explain why it has the infrared transmitter and no rear screens.
