Steering wheel shake HELP

Hi All

I have a 2012 L320 Range Rover Sport 3.0 diesel autobiography with just over 71000 miles.

Since buying it 18 months ago I have been struggling with the steering wheel shaking when driving on the motorway (shake only seems to appear at 60 mph plus).

So far I have done the following

1 - New tyres
2 - New pads, disks and calipers
3 - New anti roll bar drop links
4 - New lower control arms
5 - Tried swapping front to back with the wheels
6 - Balancing and tracking
7 - Another new set of tyres
8 - Road force balanced all the wheels and had the tracking checked.
9 - Jacked the car up and checked for any play in the wheel bearings, steering and drive shafts

But still the steering wheel shakes, I'm running out of ideas can anyone help me at all.

Regards

Ian.

I've known this to happen when the wheels have been slightly out of shape. Also (and sorry if I missed it) have you had a Hunter Tracking Alignment done? Barrie.

Yes had the hunter tracking done this morning and tried swapping the wheels front to rear but still the problem persists, its starting to spoil my enjoyment of the car.

I suffered the same for a bit and my list was not as long as yours. It’s took 3 shops to balance the wheels and find a dodgy bush in the end. Since then and knock on wood all good. 2018 Telsa MS

Looking at what you've had checked, if the rims are all ok as in shape and weight and the bushes are all good then maybe loose motor mounts. That's all I can think of. Barrie.

Hi just for info, been checking a few things on the sport this morning and I have checked all four wheels for left and right and up and down play with nothing obvious found. Also tried the steering for play and again nothing obvious. The only thing I found today was a very small amount of movement in the rear drive shaft center bearing.

The only question I have now is how much movement is acceptable?

Having recently had something similar, both my near side wheels were slightly buckled. Perhaps find a tyre place near you that can check. Cost £65 each but afterwards it’s smooth as a smooth thing. Surely it’s free to check?. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

Update

I have the car booked in on Friday with K Motors in Leyland to see if they can diagnose the issue, so hopefully I will be able to update you all on Friday evening.

Also got told that another potential is the RHF drive shaft, as this is the longer of the two front drive shafts it has been known for them to bend slightly and cause the vibration.

Regards

Ian.

I have the exact same shaking at 60mph and i know 100% i need a new rear drive shaft which my indy is scheduled to do when i have time and the funds to get it in, So theres a good chance it is this part thats at fault with me having same issue on same vehicle.

Hi Jases4x4 do you get any vibration or shaking through the floor? I was out in mine yesterday and the only issue I get is the steering wheel shaking from left to right. Had a good feel around the floor and other areas and there was no other signs of vibration in the car.
