I agree that the V8 is enticing but when are you going to use the performance? There's really nowhere apart from a track where the potential of a performance car can be used, especially one a large as a RRS. I've got my Sport for comfort and ease of driving, just no hassles. For fun though, I do have an Alpine A110 which is compact and quick.

what ever you do have fun,

In lots of places… it makes driving safer if anything… quickly matching speeds when joining motorways, overtaking the odd caravan on the A roads etc…
Providing it is used sensibly!

As an aside the ULEZ … you’ll save yourself fortunes when the other cities start joining that cash cow!
It’s madness that our late 15 plate and low mileage Evoque is not compliant and we have already suffered the fines accordingly… yet our SVR is free!

Thanks for all the replies!

Unfortunately my budget doesn’t stretch to the reg plate as well Tyrefitter but it’s a good one!

I agree with Farmer Chalk on the power/speed front - as long as it’s used carefully.

My only other option would be an SDV8 but I don’t think the very slight performance increase is worth the price premium especially as diesels seem to be increasingly in the firing line.

Haha - thanks Naks - I was hoping you’d reply as I’ve seen your V8 posts many times over the years!

Did you ever get to the bottom of the V8S motor issues (worn valve guides or something leading to needing a new engine) as I saw you commenting on this on another LR forum? How commonplace do you think this is?

Thanks again

Hi, no, I don't think that this is a widespread issue - most likely due to incorrect oil or shoddy maintenance intervals .

The pre-2012 AJV8s did suffer from elongated timing chain issues, but it was easily detectable and fixed. I've not heard of this issue happening on the L494.

As a preventative measure, I had the infamous crossover coolant pipe and the water pump replaced, just before I got to 100Kkm. Since then, I swear that the fuel consumption has gotten better, although my mechanic says I'm imagining it 😂

Highly recommend that you get the gearbox oil replaced at around the 80Kkm mark. --

I have a P400 so no problems with the space saver,

RRS sold and replaced with a Skoda Kodiaq after appalling RR Dealer experience and LR inability to supply new cars in any sort of reasonable time frame..

Prior to 2012 the guides/tensioner used aluminium plungers in the tensioners to tension the chains, these were found to wear excessively and cause the problem so they were modified and use stainless steel one from 2012 (Vin No.CA759578) on, which appear to have cured the problem. Unlike the 3.0L crank. Very Happy

Although a L320 I bought my 5.0L S/C to scratch a "itch" that was over eight years ago before the SVR was even in production, it has been such a good car I still have it and it has never been in a dealers for more that a day and that was when it was being serviced, except the six weeks it spent in a container when I shipped it to NZ. Laughing

Forget about the fuel, If you try really hard you can get very good fuel consumption. Rolling with laughter

Cheers
Col

I don't have an L494 but do have a MY2013 L320 with the 5.0 SC engine and love it. Fortunately, I only cover 4-7k per year and therefore the 16-17 MPG is not a big issue. This is mainly 4-10 mile journeys. On a long trip I have averaged 25MPG. This is also with GG AT3 all terrain tyres fitted too (V rated of course) which won't help my MPG.

The mid range performance (say 50-100 MPH where legal) is exceptional. Safe overtaking, joining motorways, etc is so much easier with 500+ BHP from a supercharged big V8 - its the instant response from a great engine. The noise just adds to the fun. I've had the car three years and cannot see me changing it soon - especially as its only done 53k miles to date.

In summary - definitely go for the 5.0 SC! Cool There is no replacement for displacement - W O Bentley

I must have the same type of boots as Andy wears Rolling with laughter as I've never seen more than 20 mpg on a run in eight years with my old L320 S/C. if the Lie-O-Meter is to be belived.

Thanks again for the replies guys.

I think Col sums it’s up best - I have a motoring itch that needs to be scratched before this type of car is simply not viable anymore.

Plus, NFU has just come back to say I’ll get a £8.31 premium REFUND if I swap from the SDV6 to the V8S…

That’ll pay for me to start the engine once anyway!

So I swapped my SDV6 for the V8 s/c yesterday and - wow - what an engine! The car feels totally different from my SDV6, much more like an old-school V8 Range Rover but with the dynamics of the L494 - amazing!

The sound is - in my mind - perfect: you can just about always hear a faint V8 burble but as soon as you put your foot down it sounds incredible. It also doesn't seem to suffer from the junction/roundabout hesitation that the SDV6 suffered from...

The Signature Reference sound system is definitely in another league from my previous 825W Meridian one but I would say it's only worth the extra £££ if you're an audiophile.

I can't seem to get the small digital MPH readout to appear above the fuel gauge - have tried all the menus with engine off etc and no luck - have booked it in with local LR Main Dealer for engine, gearbox and instrument cluster software update on Thursday, hopefully they can sort it out...but any ideas welcome!

Finally, the fuel gauge read 40 miles till empty and I only managed to get 81 litres in - I think this is a known calibration issue rather than my car not having the 105 litre tank that it's supposed to have?!
