Replacing ignition barrel without a key

In an attempt to fix the wandering steering-sensor dog on my car I've bought a replacement steering column for my L320. It is second hand and so has the ignition barrel in it. All guides I can find start the barrel replacement procedure with 'turn key to position I'. Not having a key, I can't do this.

Is there another option or is it a brute force job?? Sad

Remove the 2 bolts securing the barrel to the column, it will wiggle off, and you'll be able to turn it
