I fitted winter tyres for the first time ever last year, and the difference was unbelievable.

I remember a video with Ford Kuga, 2WD and 4WD, going up an indoor ski sloop.

Yes, the 2WD Kuga on winters got most of the way up, the 4WD on winters got all the way up. The two on summer tyres didn't do much different other than the 4wd getting a bit further before failing and sliding back.

In that case are general grabber at2/at3 any good or should I be changing my tyres for a full on all winter tyres rather than all season tyres? RRS TDV6 2010 |

My understanding is that at least a part of the reasons for Winter Tyres working is the "sipes" that are built into the tyre - forgive me if I'm preaching to the converted. I believe that the way they work is that, just like when building a snow ball, the snow which gets stuck in the sipes grabs the snow on the road and improves the grip of the tyre on snow. So I am not too sure how they work on say ice, or just cold wet roads. I guess there may well be other elements of the tyre construction which also help with grip. However, dealing with just the sipes, if you regularly get snow then it may well be worth investing in winter tyres. Here in the South East in practice we don't get much snow (famous last words) and so having considered winter tyres, I have now so far not taken the plunge and bought any. Winters (in my experience, anyway) have significantly more grip in cold, wet and icy conditions - not just snowy.

Don’t forget to check with your insurer. Somebody mentioned it on the Disco3 site as theirs was classed as a modification. I’m with Admiral and they said it’s not a modification. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue. |

Grabber AT3 is winter rated - it has the 3pmsf symbol. It's worth noting that it won't be as good as a pure road winter tyre because it doesn't have the sipe density nor is the compound as soft - it has to be robust enough for off road work after all. Having said that, I found the AT3 to be pretty good in snowy conditions - never got stuck, no nasty moments. But not so good in conditions where the surface is icy but that is to be expected as the tyre is just not as optimised for such conditions as a pure winter road tyre would be. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

"Mud and snow" is fairly meaningless. It's a US manufacturer thing which just means it has larger spaces between tread blocks than a normal tyre might. A winter tyre will carry the M&S mark but not all M&S marked tyres are winter rated. Best to ignore the M&S mark as it's not really helpful. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |
