Does anyone know what this is

Got home today and noticed something was hanging out the bonnet over the ns wing, i opened the bonnet and this peice of metal dropped out. Ive got no idea what it is or how it got there. Its some sort of metal graphite like a motor brush but too big. Its approx 40mm x 40mm x 7mm. I can understand how it got where it was unless it came from the car. Any ideas.

Still no joy on this? Recent work in the car include new inlet manifold and timing belts, if that helps

It does a little, mine is chamfered on one corner, this is a factory cut not broken

I hope not, i just cant work out how it got trapped between the bonnet and wing wothout caising any damage
