My wife runs a Merc SLK which is serviced by Prestige Car Services in Horndean who have an excellent reputation for MB repairs and talking to Ollie the owner about my RRS he told me that AC Land Rover Specialists also in Horndean know their stuff and is run by an LR main dealer guy who is also a good friend of one of his guys (which may or may not be a good thing) https://www.aclandroverspecialist.com/

Please bear in mind I have absolutely zero knowledge of this company (so this is NOT a recommendation) I but follow his Facebook page and noted he has done some engine replacements recently. MY17 RRS 4.4d V8 Autobiography - Aintree Green (also referred to on Topix as British Racing Green)

These guys are only down the road for Guy Salmon in Portsmouth so could be convenient! If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

So sorry to hear this has happened to you PJBracer.

I used to have a house near Lymington and have always had my L494 (and L322) serviced by LR specialists Adrian Harvey Ltd in East Boldre.

His son George is an Ex LR main dealer mechanic and I cannot recommend him/them too highly - he knows these cars backwards and has replaced loads of engines. In your position (which I’ve often contemplated!) I wouldn’t consider anyone else.

Let me know if you want George’s number as I’m sure he’d be delighted to talk it though with you.

2014 AB 3.0 crankshaft failure and engine seizure today … 85,000 miles, owned since new, full service history, serviced 3 weeks ago and mot’d (no issues) £10k quoted by local independent LR to replace engine …. No extended warranty in place … any suggestions? 2014 RRS AB Santorini Black

Bummer Im still looking at options too I wrote and email to the head of JLR and he has passed it down the food chain again but not sure if anything will come of it!

Ive spoek with a few garages and for me most seem to be further up country! No that is really a problem but then there is a time constraint for me also as its sat at a dealer waiting on LR decision again, I doubt anything will happen.

So Im just going out to indies I can find and asking for a price. there is a company called Global Engines that seem to be everywhere and are well priced, and then there are soem others around who are maybe a little cheaper or a little more, depending n the warranty offered which seems to range form 6 - 12 months but also have soem terms to that like service inside 600 miles and then at 3000 mile in service warranty period etc... I dont do a lot of miles.

Also its a little unclear as to the costs if say they quote a price and then once the engine is opened up it may be much more parts required if the bearing have caused the crank to snap it might not be obvious until tear down so that price could be alot more also so there is a thought that the cheaper the initial quote the lower maybe the cost would be, and on that flip side is cheaper better!

Global engines seem to say that the pric is the price and they use new parts that include a genuine service part crank anyway! I assume they take yours and if its ok and not snapped re grind and re-use in another maybe! They use all the other parts from your engine as I was a little worried about getting a DPF from a higher mileage car etc...

Ive looked around on ebay and am in the throws of speaking with some of them but alot of them have no real Companies house history so unsure as to how good they might be etc...

All the time Ive spent already on this is crazy for a problem that shouldnt have happened in the first place a least you got double the mileage I got! If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

As far as I was aware there are no genuine service cranks available from JLR. When I looked it would seem that the crank is line bored to the block and hence are a matched pair. I know someone who fitted an aftermarket (Chinese) crank and ended up in a right mess with it, end float issues and all sorts and after a lot of building and stripping, binned it and went down the JLR short block route.

This was a few years ago so things may have changed, I'd do my homework very thoroughly before going down this route.

Good to know Yeah Im trying to get as much info my guess is the refurb units use an LR gen kit from what they have all said but the block is a recon unit from another vehicle so one would guess that in my case the bearings have failed but the crank still turns over but will be scored with the swarf from the bearings so a refurb my be sufficent, the couple Ive spoken to have said they use the refurb block and the use all the other components from mine, and any of the components from mine that require cleaning and refinishing are kept.

All a massive head ache! If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

I was under the impression that LR don't release "service parts" to allow a rebuild of a failed engine. Have they changed that policy recently? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Is that a LR FSH or have you been using indies for servicing? If you have a LR FSH and you've owned it from new, I'd be asking LR for their thoughts on a contribution. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Yeah me to Im still in talks with LR at the moment mine is FLRSH btu Im not the first owner of it and as thee is no warranty the inital response is FO! But speaking with the guys at the LR dealer where she is still sat they said they agreed that there should be some assistance from LR due to it history and mileage!

The service parts are gen LR or so Im told now they may be built into a kit by a reseller I guess. according to the dealer though

The quote I have included new turbos etc.... so it is priced high but I guess its techncially new everything except for the outside parts and the block!

I might hear another no today or tomorrow and then have to make the choice of going for the indy or the LR quote, if the LR quote could be closer to the 10K mark id just say go ahead but even then still not sure it actually buys piece of mind!

The only difference i can see is their quote includes the turbos which are about 1500 each and if the indy tears the enigne down and finds they need replacing as they cant refnished them then it will need some more bmping that cheaper price up getting ever closer to LR and only 12 month warra, on the flip side of that it might be the turbos on mine are fine and with a clean and bit of a grind can be resued whcih will keep the cost down!

And they wonder why people go postal! If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

LR for first 5 years and Indy for last 2 years
It looks like it may be cheaper to go down the Indy route if JLR only give 20-30% off their prices 2014 RRS AB Santorini Black
