Hi Naks,

Like everyone else very jealous of your trip!
What lens are you using on your camera - or are you REALLY close?!

Thanks! Current car - 2016 MY17 L494 in black - sometimes towing a Buccaneer Cruiser.
Sadly gone - 2013 L320 3.0 TD in grey! sometimes towing a Buccaneer Cruiser.

@cassman

I'm using a newly-bought Tamron 18-400mm lens on my 2007 Nikon D40.

Most of the photos we are fairly close, for example, the leopard eating in the tree was probably 4-5m away or so?

But if you compared these photos with the later ones from my Londolozi ones, you will see a marked improvement: I hired a Nikon 200-500mm lens there and it just blew my mind as to how good the Nikon stuff is compared to Tamron.

So much so that I'm now considering buying the Nikon 200-500mm lens purely for wildlife photography, while keeping the Tamron for 'normal' photography. The cons are the size and weight - easily 3kg. --

18-400 its quite a lens! I use my Sigma 18-250 which is nice - but lacks your top-end.

4-5meters is rather close! I trust you were sat nice and safe in the car?

Must admit I'm leaning towards hiring a lens - for when we can go places again.

The 200-500mm was enough i take it - were you always at the higher end or just depended?

thanks! Current car - 2016 MY17 L494 in black - sometimes towing a Buccaneer Cruiser.

4-5m is about average distance for a sighting, sometimes the animals walk close enough by the car that they brush against it.

200-500mm is good enough even for animals in the distance, but the downside is that if they are too close, then the 200mm is just too much and you can't get a good shot. One example was when we drove around a corner and there was a leopard sat next to the road, and at 200mm, its head took up the entire frame.

For birds, especially, you're almost always at max zoom, because they don't tend to stay close to the roads/cars, and same for the amphibians & reptiles - hippos, crocs, etc.

I have seen though, that the preferred gear for the game rangers is Canon: usually the 5D/6D with the 100-400mm lens. This combo provides a good balance between zoom and size/weight. --

That close must be rather exciting!

OK will remember your advice for when we finally get to go out and see the animals.
