Hi all,

RRS HSE 3.0 TDV6 2011

A few times over a few years I've had a 'restricted performance' issue, which went away overnight. It usually occurred when giving it a bit of gas, in 3rd or 4th gear and uphill (really!).

Yesterday I pulled off from some lights, headed off towards the motorway (uphill) and put my foot down a bit more than usual. As I got to about 100-120 kmh I got the dreaded Restricted Performance message and limp mode. I got home slowly, tried this morning and within a few mins, I got the Restricted Performance message AND now the yellow engine light on the dash.

Has anyone got an idea of what it is most likely to be please? I've read and read so many opinions and the only one I like is an apparent software update which could cure it, but I would be really grateful for your opinions before it goes into my local garage. I live in Mallorca and it's not an official or unofficial dealer, so I might be able to point them in the right direction too.

Could be a split inlet manifold. You can check it by putting the engine under load. Have the gearbox in drive, foot very firmly on the brake pedal, add the throttle and it'll rev to around 2500rpm. With the bonnet open, you should hear a hissing noise if the inlet manifold is split. That's as my garage informed me when mine went, anyway. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

That doesn't seem too much to fix the problem, to be honest. I would be relieved if that's all it cost me.

i had exactly same problem , fortunately a local indie fixed mine cost approx £550 ,
but 10 months later the other manifold went
so think about have both done ! may get a better price for 2

+1 for inlet manifold / manifolds.

They're practically a consumable. Both my originals replaced and one of the replacements replaced in 75k miles.

If it is the manifold, is it ok to drive 5km to the repair centre, or better to get it towed?

You can drive it, just do it gently. Basically, what happens is that you give it a bit of throttle and the negative pressure in the manifold causes the split to open sucking in air. This then leads to an imbalance in the fuelling because it effectively runs lean. The ECU picks it up because the exhaust gases don't "taste" right to the sensors.

There is no need to get towed, if it is the manifold. The vehicle only goes into limp mode to comply with emission regulations. There could be loads of older motors that have inlet manifold leaks, but legislation did not stipulate they have to throw a tantrum.
I had similar issue to yourself and I've just had my second set of inlet manifolds in under 2 years (3k miles), fortunately they were still under warranty. MY12 RRS HSE

I carefully drove the car to the mechanics yesterday. He said he'd look at it then, but I'm still waiting for the diagnosis the next evening. Unfortunately, the manana manana life of Spain also applies to German car mechanics here and they really don't care how worried we are about the cause of the problem!

Anyway, it's fingers crossed time!

I don't do to many miles, as my local indy isn't too far, that's the only run it gets, to replace inlet manifolds and handbrake. .

Off to Wales in May, so should hopefully put a few miles on.
Don't get me wrong, she doesn't go wrong much, but she does pick the worst times, when I don't have time to fix her myself. MY12 RRS HSE

Just a personal observation, but the more regularly I used my car, the more reliable it seemed to be. I used to be quite a high miler (>25k for nearly 20 years) and seemed to have less bother than mates who just had relatively short commutes. Age of vehicle was not a factor, I always bought ex-company cars >3 years old with 70-80k already on the clock. RRS HSE Dynamic SDV6 2014
