Iphone cradle in cup holder

Iphone cradle part number VPLRV0119 is for a 2014 onwards however I have a 2009 facelift. Spoke to local dealer to verify it is incompatible. They have no idea why, has anyone encountered this part and had any success fitting into the 2009/2013?

I assume that if you only want power you could wire up a suitable 12V adapter under the centre dash to connect the USB to.

I don't know how the iPhone connects to the 2009 or 2013 Sports and how it's controlled, but' I'd assume that has something to do with it.
