I wouldn't, your current tyre diameter is 31", your spare 27", so I would expect the car to throw a hissy fit.

are you sure Question Shocked

a 17" wheel sounds wrong with that tyre size, you should use a wheel tyre combination that matches the same size radius
it does NOT have to be the same size (255/55/20) but should match and a 255/55/20 has a radius of 394mm

dont think your size is a standard fit size either Question 255/50/19 369mm could have had 255/55/19 (G4's had them) 382mm

Thumbs Up

edit. you could fit a 245/75/17 to that wheel to get a radius of 400mm so +6mm but I would check it actually fits on your car first and clears the brake calipers Question

I think you would actualy struggle to get a 255/55 x 20" fitted under the car, I did manage to get a 275/45 x 21" in there but vert tight needed to use a Dremel to smooth a couple of welds off, and that according to some tyre size sites it is 781mm diam. and the 55 profile is 789mm.

Cheers

While the base D3 came with 17" rims, I dont think 17" were ever fitted to the RRS as standard. So your spare is not original. As others have said the diameter difference is too much and will cause issues if used. Why not get a wheel and tyre combo the same as fitted in your car to use as your spare - you will have to leave it deflated to fit in the wheel well and carry a means of inflating it if needed. 07MY RRS TDV6

The simple answer is no. A 17 inch rim won't fit over the brakes on a TDV8 for a start.

Assuming you've made a typo, the correct spare should be 255/50/19.

A 255/50/19 fitted to a RRS with 255/55/20 will cause the DSC to throw a wobbly. At 50mph, the speed difference will be about 4mph and that will definitely make it "not happy".

The original RRS, such as yours, never came with 255/55/20 - that's a size of the later current-shape RRS (the L494). Yours came with either 255/50/19 or 275/40/20. 275/40/20 on the road with 255/50/19 as a spare will work ok as the size is very close.

You can fit 255/55/19 road tyres and that will also fit in the spare tyre space under the boot - although it is tight (this is what I run). You can fit 275/45/20 on the road and I think that will also just fit in the spare so you could have matching tyres on the road and spare. 275/45/20 is a few mm smaller in diameter than the 255/55/19 so it should fit although it will stick down a bit so reducing clearance at the rear. Be useful if someone who has that size can confirm either way. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

He has a TDV6 not a TDV8 so 17" rims will fit. 07MY RRS TDV6

A big thanks to all of you that replied with advice and it is now clear my 17inch spare is about as much use as a rubber ladder, but before i go and buy a 255/50/19 for the spare can any one confirm it will definetly fit underneath my car inflated ?,

At 29" overall diameter it is less than my 275/45x21 by a little over 1 1/2"s, so I would say yes it will fit.

Hi,
it will certainly fit its the standard size (I had the same size)
BUT
why would you buy one as it does not match the size you say is on your car so its still NO GOOD to you as a spare Shocked

A tin of gloop would be much cheaper and actually be of some use

Thanks for all your input i have now got a 255/50/19 spare and it does fit under the car and i know it is not the same size as the 255/55/20 that are on the car but surely the 19" is ok as a emergency get me home ??

I wouldn’t, all wheels should be doing the same rpm, near enough, you will have one that will do doing quite a bit more so you will risk damage to your diff and possibly transfer box. Whilst they are made to do different speeds, it is normally marginally different, or for short periods, not continuously Joined the X5 45e club

Hi,
agree with Dave-T there is a 25mm difference in the Radius doubt the car will like that if you do use it, Whistle

to be honest you may have well stopped with the 17" rather that buy a 19" its not the size of the wheel that matters its the overall size Rolling Eyes

you could have bought a second hand tyre to go on the 17" wheel and it would have matched then Whistle

Thanks to you both for the feedback this spare issue is a pain in the arse the only reason i bought a 19 inch was because a 20 would not fit under the car so i have got the biggest size under there that i can, and when you say the car wont like it well for a short slow distance will that matter ?
