Is the steering supposed to be a bit on the heavy side on the Range Rover sport 2009 HSE model , as mine does seem to be a bit heavy going at low speed . Also the steering columb adjustment either man or auto doesn’t work at all and there does not seem to be a fuse to cover it , and ideas please would be nice.

Don’t know much about the electric steering column as mine doesn’t have it but the steering on mine is really nicely weighted, never heavy even at low speed but she’s only on 19’s. Steve

There is a relay (small ecu) marked ZF to make the steering light at low speeds.
It’s in passenger footwell.

And a solonoid on steering rack.

Have 22” 285? on mine (they were on it before I purchased it)

Disconnect steering rack connector.

Put a 5W bulb across connector and turn ignition on start engine.
Bulb should light.

If it lights, measure rack resistance

Can’t say I’ve ever noticed heavy steering at low speed, regardless of tyre/wheel size. I run 20s on mine in summer and 19s in winter. Now I think of it, the steering in my 2010 Sport is lighter than many other saloon/estate cars I’ve had.

Edit: Meant to add that turning the wheel whilst manoeuvring in a car park/driveway etc is usually one hand only needed to turn the wheel from lock to lock. 2010 TDV8 - current - my first RRS, loving it so far......

Mine is running the same tyre size as you, but the steering is not usually heavy.

However....

Last winter, my steering suddenly went very heavy, turned out it was a lack of lubrication in lower steering UJ, you can get to it relatively easy from underneath, maybe give that a try before getting too technical.

I think that fault means it gets stiff when hot

Had the bottom plates off today near the steering rack and found the electrical connector right off not even connected so cleaned it up and refitted and now steering nice and light , what a difference .
I now need to find out how to get the steering column electrical adjust and memory setting to work , I did hear that it may be something to do with the seat memory system but the seats all work ok .

Nice easy one

Try that setting where the seat and wheel move when you get out.
Turn the knob to auto to do this.
See if the seat moves but the wheel doesn’t.

I guess it could be unplugged.

The trim panel square comes off if you pull it from the bottom

I’ve tried it in the auto and man position and nothing, not even a sound from the steering column motors . If I press any of the memory buttons on the drivers seat the seat works fine but nothing from the steering side , there was an item on the USA Range Rover site that does mention having the dealer disable the steering column feature but surely the manual adjustment should still work , I’ll get to the bottom of this one way .
