Mice eating my engine cover insulation

Hi all,

I hope you're all well.

Sorry i know this question is probably for google rather than the RRS forum. But i have just discovered Mice have been getting into the engine my RRS and eating the engine cover insulation.

I just pray they have not done worse to the cables. Have any of you had this issue before? And if yes how did you fix it. Google suggest chicken wire to try and stop them getting in, but that doesn't sound too great. I'm sure there is a spray you can get to deter them, i will research this over the w-end but thought i would try here first.

Also i can't do anything about where i store the car, as its in a communal underground garage of a block of flats etc.

Final question, would you bother to replace the the insulation? Not even sure if you can order this separate to the cover. I know no one will ever see this, but it drives me a crazy knowing there are mouse bites out of it. If can can buy it has one done this them selfs and is it an easy job? Please see images attached.

Thank you in advance for any help 2012 RRS HSE 5.0 SUPERCHARGED Santorini Black

Buy some mouse bait boxes and fix them to parts of the car.
Are you sure it's mice as the insulation falls apart anyway.
As for replacement - I used some hvac duct foil backed insulation that I acquired from a job.

I had a similar issue with an old A Class. Some form of rodent managed to get inside my engine bay and chewed through a rubber grommet on the engine cover. Luckily no other damage.

In the end I was setting a trap inside the engine bay each night just in case it was still about.
Luckily no more issues and it must have moved home Laughing

Traps

I had the same problem with a VW Golf a few years ago. The mice ate the battery cover. I just baited a couple of mouse traps from Wilko under the car. A little bit of cheese or biscuit, and BANG! It worked. They did not return! Very Happy

Just had this with the wifes dog corsavan, they ate several of the fuel lines. I put rat poison cubes under the engine cover which they ate ,must have done the job as the next ones I put in were undisturbed. My next plan is to secure some bait boxes under the bonnet in case others fancy a snack.
Of course the ECU then died, again, so £700 later it's going. It's nice to have a spare car for muddy dogs but due to lockdown it's had very little use in the last year.

We have a Norwegian Forest cat that takes care of this for us! He is an absolute murderer and living rural nothing is off limits for him, mice are easy and regular for him around the house and outbuildings, he likes the challenge of rabbits and pheasants and the only reason he doesn’t get them in is because they are too big for the cat flap Rolling with laughter 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

Hi all, thank you very much for all the reply’s I will invest into some traps & poison for the parking space & to put under the bonnet, I’ve removed the Engine cover for the moment so they have no more insulation to eat.

I have now noticed my first time an oil leak in this incredible car it’s been so insanely reliable for the last two years of ownership Big Cry i don't think it’s the mice and just a coincidence as it appears to be coming from one of the banks 😩
Quick question have any of you worked under your RRS in raised height, without a jack & axle stands as I don’t have either of these, I just wanted to quickly remove the cover at the bottom of thee car to try & chase back exactly where the leak is coming from, I pray it’s not serious as I stopped paying the extended warranty last year 😩 2012 RRS HSE 5.0 SUPERCHARGED Santorini Black

Get it into a garage to find the cause. You don't want to ruin your engine. And for goodness sake do not work under the car without the proper equipment. It's a big heavy beast. Get the right gear or get to a garage, don't potentially risk your life or serious injury.
