L320 Side step trim

Hi all. Excuse the mess been a hectic few days. Just went out to my car and discovered this.... no idea why it’s happened but does this appear to be an easy fix and what do I need to do/ look out for in the morning? My car is a 11 RRS autobiography. Sorry i know this is basic rubbish for you guys I’m just a new owner trying my best to not mess anything up lol.

 Thanks
Liam

Hi, one of mine did exactly the same. After a clean and ensursing all the holes where free of the old rivets I used raised pop rivets - Th whole job took 30 mins and the hardest part was getting my belly between the vehicle to look for the holes Rolling with laughter

Same thing happened on my 2012. As others say a rivet or bolt will fix.

I used some rivets to make it happen. Drilled old out and put new ones in. I do remember the rivets needed to be a bit longer than what I had, cant remember exactly size, maybe 10mm?

Remember same thing happened on my old D3 driver side one a few years back.

Used a rivet gun to rivet it back on....after good clean...worked a charm and only a few pence as I had the rivet gun and rivets.

I'm in the process of painting my side runner trims in colour matched Santorini black. I removed the steps entirely and removed the trim by breaking off the rivets (70% of them had already corroded away) - they’re prone to corrosion and frequently fall off.

I’m just waiting for the final coat of lacquer to harden, then I’ll attach the trim back to the steps with self-tapping screws and large washers. If you have a rivet tool, then that will work too.

I noticed the steps themselves were rusted to bits, so I rubbed them down and sealed with direct to rust. Not a long term fix but will help a bit. If your rivets are corroded, I’d guess that the steps themselves are likely quite rusted - could be worth whipping them off and taking a look. The steps are held in the mounting brackets by 6 x 10mm bolts on each side (3 brackets on each side with 2 bolts each). Very easy to remove with a 10mm spanner and socket. They can be removed without jack the car up.

I previously re-riveted some with stainless steel pop rivets less likely to corrode, fortunately here they don't use salt on the roads though.

Cheers

Jack, I’d love to see the outcome of you spraying black when it’s finished. Can you share a picture? Thanks
Liam

Of course - I’ll post photos in the next few days after they’re all put together again. I’ll post a few pics of the individual pieces and the self tappers also for anyone searching in the future.

To be fair it's a habit I've got into over the years, any nuts, bolts, screws etc. that are prone to corrosion on vehicles like heat shields, mud flap, bumper fixings etc. that can be replaced with stainless fixings just to try and make it a bit easier if it has to come apart again.

Cheers
Col
