Agreed - they're such a great and all-round good car, not worth changing IMHO. Until rust or mechanical or emissions law says otherwise

15 year old vehicles driven a decent number of miles a year should be reasonably reliable. You can't factor for the (realistically) low risk stuff such as the 2.7 spinning its main bearings or the 3.0 snapping its crank or the 3.6 blowing a turbo, so it's a bit silly to worry about them. Driven and serviced correctly, any modern vehicle ought to be able to do big miles. Thumbs Up

The top of the list RRS are averaging 20-25k a year. That's not silly mileage (unless you add up the fuel costs!) really. My TDV8 did 30k+ a year for 3 years and it was at its most reliable in that period, I think. These beasts just like to sit doing lots of miles. They don't like being left standing all week and then doing 5 miles each way to the supermarket on a Saturday. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Zermatt Silver

My mate in Somerset can't understand why I don't sell my RRS and get something "reliable". I tell him that my car is my hobby and so I can spend money on it. The other day he even suggested that, as I liked the car so much, I would have been better off buying a new one. Well, as I like playing with spreadsheets, I reviewed the one I keep all my costs of ownership on (the fuel cost represents some 53,000 miles (25.1mpg)):

Initial Purchase Price £18,000.00
Maintenance, Repairs, Servicing, Tyres etc £12,868.47
Tax, Insurance, Warranty £4,403.21
Warranty repayments -£2,318.67
Fuel £11,488.89
Total £44,441.90

Current Value July 2020 £6,000.00
Net Total Cost £38,441.90
Number of Months owned 59

Depreciation only £12,000.00
Depreciation only per month £203.39

Total Cost per Month (allowing for residual value) £651.56

Total Cost allowing for residual value (excluding fuel) £26,953.01
Total Cost allowing for residual value (excluding fuel) per month £456.83
Cost of Fuel per month £194.73

Total Cost excluding fuel, insurance and road tax £23,518.80
Monthly Cost excluding fuel, insurance and road tax £398.62

So, would I have been better off with a new one? Well I would have had all the latest gizmos applicable to a 2016/17 model but - that aside, I'm happy with my lot thank you.

PS. Just waiting for another 300 miles or so to clock up on my odometer when I will be able to join the "6 figure club" on this posting Robin

Depreciation is the killer, its why I never buy new, or even nearly new. My vehicle has already lost over 50% of its purchase price so someone has taken a big hit.

I have this argument with a mate regularly about electric cars. Even if electricity was free and I pay for my fuel, the extra purchase cost alone wipes out any benefit and I cant see depreciation on a battery car being much different to a real one. RRS HSE Dynamic SDV6 2014

It depends how long you buy a car for. I tend to buy and keep for a long time, current one is 8.5 years. £18500 new, worth now £3500 if I take the "bits" off. Roughly £1750pa depreciation. Add to that £1500pa maintenance and that's £3k pa or £250 a month cost.

IMHO RFL and cost of fuel don't really count as you'd be using that more or less on another car or even if you allowed £50pcm extra then that's still only £300pcm/£3600pa in real terms for a prestige car or 39ppm

Still drives lovely even if looking a bit tired in places Very Happy
