Uh oh - failure to start and a christmas-tree of lights

And not the good kind of Christmas tree!

I shuffled the car on the drive the other day and on the second start (to move it back) the engine just spun over and didn't fire, accompanied by a litany of faults (IIRC Parking Brake, Dynamic Suspension, Adaptive Cruise, Emergency Brake Assist). Given all the fault codes, I'm thinking something central caused the CANBUS to lose communications - BCM maybe? Any thoughts appreciated..

There were a few more faults than this but I removed the ones that didn't trigger at the same moment:

United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Zambezi Silver

Hey chap,

I've had something similar on my '05 L320 and it always seems to appear around the start of winter and when the battery is about 5-6 years old. You said you shuntled the car around but I'm guessing you didn't leave the engine running? Worth checking the battery health.

United Kingdom 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Bali Blue

I agree, first point of call is the battery. I've been caught out more than once just moving the car off and on the drive or leaving the doors open for a while especially when the battery is a couple of years old,,, takes very little to discharge it. 2010 RRS, TDV8
bali Blue / colour coded
side steps / flappy paddles
black perforated leather
22" overfinch
heated everything, TV,fridge ...... now with gold calipers and mud flaps !( black mud flaps that is) !!
Many years ago,,,,, 1955 series 1 landie , sometimes wish I had kept it

Hopefully it's just that - the battery is a 1 year old Varta and the alternator is the same age, but it isn't exactly doing any long journeys at the moment..

What made me think "not battery" was just how fast it span over when it wasn't starting - just as fast as normal but zero attempt to 'catch'.

I'll see how it goes.. Smile

Thanks!

The faults paint an interesting picture, though.. most of them happened last night (20-12-2020) but some happened earlier with very similar wording. Trying not to join too many dots, though! I think the instrument pack one is related to the occasional 'flicker' which probably means it is dying inside, the cornering lamp failure is clearly because .. well, the bulbs are blown (I did wonder!) but the rest look like a CAN-fart.

Battery voltage was reported as 11.7v when I checked the fault codes, though, which for a brand new (year old) battery and a new (year old) alternator is basically flat dead.. time for some time on the charger to see if it recovers.

If it isn't the battery, though, are there any known wiring faults? I think I've read about moisture ingress into the one under the scuttle in the battery box, and the passenger footwell where the BCM lives? Those probably need checking - any others? 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S
