Using handbrake when stopped at lights

Sometimes when stopped at traffic lights I leave the car in D and pull the handbrake up, allowing me to take my foot of the brake pedal. When it's time to set off, I can just press the accelerator and it will automatically release the handbrake.

Is this okay to do or is it putting too much pressure on the handbreake mechanism?

It will just wear out the hand brake shoes more quickly but otherwise is fine. 07MY RRS TDV6
