Thought it was too good?

So the sports being running great recently and we’re away with our caravan and on the way down?.....gearbox fault limited gears Sad great, codes PO730/735 5 gear incorrect ratio, reset and did it again but we’re here. Not used her much since we got here just to go to the shops and she seems okay if a little reluctant to change up from standstill, just hope she can get us home?
My limited research indicates internal clutches/torque converter clutches? Anyway expensive! Happy days worry about that later. Steve

Well that’s what I figured, is there any chance it will get us back or will just fry the box? Is it better to use manual at the moment? Steve

Used her in manual today only a short distance and worked well, we’re out for the day tomorrow down to St Ives and we’ll see how she goes 🤞🤞 Steve

Well she got us and the caravan back from Cornwall okay using manual mode Thumbs Up Used her today in auto and seems okay apart from the usual occasional reluctance to change up from 1st (this change isn’t always smooth in manual) and a reluctance to kick down sometimes, other than that it’s very smooth. I have noticed a rasping noise from under the car at a point you would expect the turbo to kick in, don’t know if this is connected?

Anyway going to shop around for some quotes to rebuild/recondition the box and decide what to do Neutral Steve

Hi Steve,

I know this is an old thread but I have recently had my TDV8 throw up an P0730 code once or twice a week with a hard gear change 5th to 6th, odd thing is it runs well 90% of the time with all gear changes being smooth. Had a gearbox oil change 500 miles ago but it’s still doing it.
So did you get your issue diagnosed and repaired and was it a gearbox rebuild, and what was the cost?

Thanks Lee

Hi Lee,

No I haven’t, same as you mines running fine but then I’m only doing short trips at the moment but done some short motorway trips and no problems changing and no codes recorded. Only issues I have is a slight rasping noise if I accelerate hard uphill or sometimes on overrun in lower gears and she has a habit of not holding lower gears at low speed keeps like dropping into neutral so I get a bit of transmission shunt.

I’ve done a test for water in the fluid (not glycol) that was okay. I’ve done the stationary TC test and I do get some noises so I’m of the opinion as Disco said she really needs a new TC and gearbox recon but the way things are at moment it’s not at the top of my list.

At the moment she’s running great (23mpg round town) and code free which is a bonus👍😀 Steve

Thanks for replying Steve

And it does sound similar and I’m in no rush to spend £2k plus at the moment, mines returning around 22mpg with lots of short town trips at the moment too and as it only happens going from 5th to 6th every now and again it’s not an issue, I am just a little worried that not sorting the issue early could lead to further damage and more costs. When I did the TC test my RPM goes to around 2200rpm and there is a few noises but nothing major, so not sure if that’s good or bad.

Thanks Lee

No worries Lee,

I’m thinking of doing another fluid change? it was done by a LR specialist before purchase 13 months ago and I put two tubes of Dr Tranny in 10 months ago, can’t hurt?

In my research the thing that can do the main damage is if there’s coolant mixing with the fluid through a faulty intercooler.

The only thing that may push mine up the list is if we’re going to be able to use the caravan this year.

Think I’m going to try a fluid change at some point? Can’t hurt👍

Good luck with yours. Steve

Same to you and I think I will look at a power flush and some Dr Tranny for now and see how things go Lee

Just done our usual trip to Perranporth with our tin tent and had no gearbox errors at all😀🥳👍 I had made a hash of checking the fluid level a couple of months ago and had to replace about 3 litres and popped in a fresh litre of AG55 and a tube of Dr Tranny and week ago.

So when we get back I’m going to do a full transmission fluid change as I’m not convinced the fluid the Land Rover specialist put in for the dealer I bought it off 3 years back was not up to spec.[/url] Steve
