Always advised to keep a replacement brake pedal switch when i owned a disco 4, as lots of know issues surrounding them, and an easy fit to get you out of trouble.
Disco now gone, but i still have the spare replacement switch.

I can answer the first part - yes it is an issue with the RRS and a lot of us carry a spare.
